I'm going to the San Diego gun show Saturday and might get another handgun, but want to pick up a shotgun today. Does the shotgun count as a handgun to the state?

No, you can buy as many as you want, whenever you want.

That only applies to the purchase of handguns through an FFL.

PPT are exempt from the once per 30 day rule.

Long guns, you can buy your heart out.

You're welcome. Buy one for each day of the week.

Does a shotgun count as a handgun?

I dunno. Ask yourself that again.

In California, anything can happen. It is not a bad question.

The question wasn't for my discernment, the question was to see how the state perceives things. Perhaps you should read more closely before popping off.
