I'd like to go bear hunting in Trinity or Shasta counties this fall but I need a hunting partner. I'm a handgun kind of a guy, a like minded person would be preferable but that's not a deal killer.

EDIT: OOPS! I meant next fall, like in 2009, my bad.

I may be wrong - but I think that the bear quota might already be filled for the state - I was in a Wallyworld the other day, and I think they had something about it on the sporting dept desk.
I hope I'm wrong - but you should verify. I went out last year with a buddy of mine east of Fresno - and we got a huge bear - about 600lbs - it was pretty fun.

Yep, bear hunting is over for this year, just got the letter. I have to return a blank tag by February.

The other guy in the pics is also a calgunner. The guide said that it was the largest bear he'd seen in a few years.

Is that a brown phase black bear or a grizzly? Looks like a black bear. Just curious.

Very nice bear, even in alaska that would be a fine bear.

Heres a pic of the one I took last year. Not sure how much it weighed but it was 6'4" from tail to nose skinned out.

It was a brown/blonde Black bear ...unless we accidentally shot the last Griz in Cali...Oops. Thats a nice bear you got yourself there too - and what an awesome background. Where was that?

Where about were you in AK. I usually hunt near Wasilla. Been hunting around the Dillingham and Bethel area too. Nice bear! Here's a pic of my last moose hunt in AK.

I see the hunter, but not the hunted :) Any luck on that hunt, or was it just nice long walk in the woods?

Those are awesome photos! Looks like a good and clean shot. Just wondering what kind of rifle/caliber did you guys use? I plan to go next year.

I would say some thing in a .270 or bigger for bear. My preference is a 300wsm. Just me 2 cents

Stockton- That was outside of Homer and we float planed into a glacial lake called KINNINKINIK lake. Not sure if I spelled that right. My dad and I both got bears there within 3 days. We just camped along the glacial lake. You can hike a mile and explore the glacier. Of all the places I have been in alaska that is definitely the prettiest. We could just sit at our camp and watch the mountain goats roam the hillsides. There were quite a few bear there too and I saw a pack of 8 black wolves. In fact this next coming year we are thinking about going up and doing a wolf hunt in the same place.

Dark&Good- my rifle is a Ruger M77 in a laminate stock .300wsm caliber. It dropped that bear literally right in its tracks. It was an 80 yard shot. For being a ruger it is surprisingly accurate. It shoots one inch groups at 100 yards with ease. It is currently my favorite hunting rifle.

Nice pics everyone, youre making me all antsy to get out in the woods.
