View Full Version : What Lower is this?

I came across a picture of some new Lower Receiver somewhere that looked almost identical to the Magpul protoype lower. It had a built-in trigger guard and everything, but I can't for the life of me remember what company was building them.

Here is a pic of the (beautiful) Magpul lower for reference...

Stubborn Mule Outdoor was selling one similar to the Magpul, but is now making the LaRue lower in some kind of exclusive deal with them. They are no longer selling them to anyone else.

Tactical Innovations also makes a billet lower, but I have heard that they are a little rough in the finish department.

What? The Masada is a completely different rifle altogether - doesn't use an AR lower

It's certainly one of the two Paladin lists. The SMOS looked a lot like the Magpul (enough LaRue had to change their triggerguard design when they took over).

No, it is not a LaRue/SMOS or for the Masada/ACR. It is also not POF. Magpul had their own lower made last year or the year before.

That specific lower is owned by Stickman on the WEVO forum.

The lower is made from Unobtanium. As Magpul only gave them out to a few select people for T&E. They were supposed to make something like 500-600 Billet lowers but that never happened. They are too busy now making their other products.

He has a few different uppers with it. Here's one of them.

He posted the pic of the magpul for a reference, it's not the lower he is asking about. The lower he is asking about is most likely the LaRue.

My mistake.

There is also the Tactical Innovations T-15;

These billet lowers are hot as hell, especially the magpul one. Is there any advantage to a billet vs a forged lower?

Yeah, they look nice. Otherwise, no.

They are (arguably) stronger. But even a standard milspec is cut from a pretty damn strong forging.

Thing is, strength is not something that's really needed in the lower. Strength is important in the upper.

But billet lowers sure as hell do look sexy :) I've got one on my list of things to buy, but it's to the back of the list since they typically cost 2-3X a normal lower.

Sundevil and Mega lowers are billet, and only cost a little bit more than normal forged ones, but they aren't super fancy like most billet ones. They look a lot more like standard forged ones.

You have your arguments reversed. The forged should be stronger, especially using the same alloy.

The Sun Devils actually use a less strong alloy.

Mega lowers are forged, not billet.

I said "arguably" stronger. Because most billet lowers have thicker walls and dimensions.

But I also said that it doesn't matter, either :)

Per Magpul on a different forum, they lost their A** making those lowers. They only made about 800 of them. Their insurance company will not allow them to sell firearms. A few went to "friends and family" and their insurance company gave them special permission to sell 50, and 50 only to John Noveske. These will be the only ones in circulation for some time. I doubt any of the others will ever be sold as stripped lowers.

Newbie question... could one even make the Magpul lower CA complaint with the ambi mag catch? Would the second mag catch allow the magazine to be released even with a BB installed? Nevertheless, a sweeet piece!!!

trinydex
01-15-2009, 10:34 PM
ambicatch will allow the mag to be dropped even with a bb, you'd need to pin it with a p50 and top load.

or you can just drop your mags with an mmg build.

1) take out the ambi mag release, use a BB

2) take out the pistol grip, use MMG

3) use it as is.... use a dedicated .22lr upper OR put in a .22lr conversion and that will be your .22LR RIMFIRE rifle...

all 3 ways.... are CA-legal

PS. The ONLY question I had is... with all those AMBI controls... why the heck do they NOT put in an AMBI safety!?!?
