AUSTIN — DEVELOPING STORY:
Police are looking for two suspects after an early morning shootout in which officers killed a man firing an AK-47 assault rifle at them.
Cops say the gun battle happened before dawn Thursday after a short pursuit of the vehicle suspected in an earlier shooting that injured two men.
Police Chief Art Acevedo tells the Austin American-Statesman that the wounded victims are in the hospital in stable condition.
There were four other people in the car with the suspect who was killed, and Acevedo says police have two of them in custody but the other two remain at large.
Officials say seven schools near the site of the shooting and chase were closed for the day as a precaution.

I wonder if it really was an Ak-47, the media often assume every weapon thats not a handgun is an Ak. At least they caught most of them.

It's always an AK, isn't it? Something tells me it's just another rifle that isn't a .22 or bolt action, just like how in some regions any carbonated non alcoholic beverage is referred to as a Coke.

What? Didn't they know about the 1000' rule? Heathens.

If only they thought of all the rules they have to break in order to commit a crime...

im surprised the 7.62 rounds didn't get under police armor and no officer is injured. That's good news though.
it no cops were hurt and guys didn't hit their targets then in probably was an ak :leaving:

Don't trust the media. I have read articles in the paper about incidents that I wrote the police report for that were completely inaccurate. That being said AK's do make there way here. A lot of the ones I have seen recovered are illegal imports from china (selective fire).

it can be a variant of an ak. but to call it a 47 is a stretch.

Everything's an "assault rifle". Just like the guy that shot at people at a church picnic or whatevers .22 an "AR-15 assault rifle"

Well, I may very well be wrong, but that Looks like an Ak -74 (judging by the magazine) with the buttstock removed and what appears to be no dust cover over the receiver, and the sling jury-rigged in some odd place on the receiver.

Yes, it does. The magazine looks like a 7.62x39 but the angle the pic was taken at makes it look a little less curved like a '74 mag.
No dustcover.
No stock or grip. (Quite slim and concealable w/out a magazine in it)
And it's milled.
AK-47 would be an accurate way to describe that weapon.
I'm just glad no real people got hurt. It could have been some bad ban propaganda had a LEO or bystander got hit.

looks like a Yugo M70
- 3 vent cuts in handguard and forearm
- one big screwhole for buttstock mount... looks milled, but it's heavy stamped receiver
- side sling swivel

That explains why no one was injured! If the suspects had a pistol grip they could have spray fired from the hip without ever having to reload!!!

It's an AK in the same way that every police firearms altercation not involving a handgun is billed as 'automatic machine gun'. I'm waiting for the day a shooter turns out only to have a painted super soaker and it'll still be a 'machine gun' in the press.

After the Hollywood shootout, every long gun is a machine gun in the eyes of the media.
Glad the cops got him, one less idiot in this world.

Cops often don't know what firearms are which either.

Realize that it's not a real reason. Obama and those like him have an agenda. They merely use high profile crimes to further their agenda which makes them despicable. The crime and murder rates in most large urban towns is astounding. The fact that these areas are controlled by those with a similar ideology to Obama is not a coincidence. They don't mind being failures as long as they get to be in control.

Your argument doesn't make any sense. You're trying to make a macro situation out of a micro event. And guess what -- Bush hasn't made any statement about what's happening in his home state, now has he? If he did, would you say he has an agenda that's despicable too?
Nobody likes crime, and home invasion burglaries, as the suspects in Austin are supposed to have attempted, are a real drag for the neighbors (but a boon for the local PD and media). At least the rookie cop shot dead the bullet-proof vested creep who emptied the AK-47 at him.

Sorry, did I hit a nerve? Stop trying to deny the obvious especially on a gun forum. Your Obama bumper sticker is showing. I'll stand by my comments anytime. There are many urban areas that are a failure in more regards than one that are controlled by the left, yet somehow the point of contention becomes firearms, and more anti-gun laws. Thankfully the state of Texas has common sense.

All the better to expand the gun ban to include Mexico.

Imagine if they would have a barrel shroud too, you know that shoulder thing that goes up. Then they would have been able to fire from the hip without having to reload and never miss anything!

Mexico has it's own, no military calibers for civilians and that any calibers used by any military. As you can see gun control works as well in Mexico as it does here. ;)
