View Full Version : BCM Bolt Carrier Group - Auto vs Semi question

I've heard the BCM bolt carrier group is a solid reliable choice for the AR15. However, looking around, I can only find versions that say "Auto" - http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Bolt-Carrier-Group-MPI-Auto-M16-p/bcm%20bolt%20carrier%20group%20auto%20mp.htm

Is this a full auto part? Will it work properly in a semi auto rifle? Would having this part in a semi auto AR15 get me in legal trouble?

Also, how is an auto bolt carrier different from a semi auto carrier? I thought the difference was in the trigger group, sear, etc.

Thanks!
Mark

Curious myself. Ammoman http://www.ammoman.com/webstore_oddlots.htm has it on sale for 65 bucks delivered.

It is a full-auto part.
It will work in a semi-auto only rifle.
It will not get you in any trouble.
The basic difference between auto and semi-auto carriers is that the rear underside of the semi-auto carrier is cut short.

Thanks ChrisXD45T.

BTW - for an interesting read on full auto BCGs, see http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=83237

If you read the whole thread, you will see BATF says you should not use M16 BGS's, but then says if the gun doesn't fire full auto then it is OK. Classic gun owner dilemma - you can be fully legal but at risk of breaking the law - even though you aren't.

That said, I'm getting a BCM Auto BCG once they are in stock. I have NO intention of making the rifle full auto, I just want a top notch BCG.

I posted up a more recent letter that's FAR more straightforward and forthright about this.

Specifically here's the letter to Grant of G&R tactical.

Keep in mind, with that carrier, you'll need to buy a bolt, firing pin, cam pin and firing pin retaining pin. What is nice about it is the BCM bolts are available, but the complete BCGs are not. So you can roll your own for about the same price. Now.

Thanks ChrisXD45T.
