Was looking at .223 target/varmint bolt guns last weekend and the counter guy asks, "Are you interested in a semi-auto?" He picked up a Evolution from a rack and handed it to me. Geez, beautiful gun: gorgeous laminated wood stock, expert machining. But the thing was like a 10/22 on steroids. The receiver was the size of a brick. Solid as a rock, but... I passed.

I think the CZ 527 may be what I'm looking for. Nice feel. Great action. Clean design and finish. Solid reviews.

Thoughts?

Also look at the Remington 700 SPS and Tikka T3. The 700 has more parts available and can be customized further. Don't forget the Savage either.

I have an Evolution, it's a great gun but its design does lead to some definite opinions. I like that it takes AR mags - a heavy target gun with Beta Mags and a bipod, such fun.

Anyway, the CZ 527 is a fine gun and I have some of their other guns like the 550 and rimfire 452. I don't think of the 527 as a varmint gun per se, more like a walking around general purpose gun. I've been thinking of getting one for a while, I guess I'd buy one just for the heck of it.

If I were going to get a CZ strictly for varmint I'd get the 550 Kevlar in 223. I have one in 308 and it shoots very well. I know it's not often mentioned as a 1st choice, but the Ruger 77 Target model is an excellent gun. I've had one for years and shooting it is almost boring.

CZ's are nice guns. A friend has a 427 I believe and loves that gun. I am thinking of getting a .22 CZ as well. Oh I have a Tikka T3 in .308 and I am very happy with it, It's smooth and very well built. I would buy a Tikka or a CZ in .223

Looked at that as well. The palm swell on the stock fits me perfectly. Just a couple bucks more.

Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special is a nice, affordable alternative. You can find them for less than $ 500.00.

I have a Tikka T3 Super Varmint in .223. Nice. Heavy barrel. Adjustable cheek weld is a little lame.
