Hey guys, i've been looking seriously into building an AR-10 .308 here... But im 19. So im wondering how exactly I can finagle this? Does it work the same as handguns, where say, my dad can buy it, then "hand it down" to me?

My main confusion here... Im going to have to build/buy in sections. So can my dad buy the lower reciever, then hand it down to me? Or does he need to buy it, then once i complete the rifle we can transfer the whole thing? I would assume i need to prove its turned into a rifle... But then looking at that i can be handed down a handgun i dont see why i couldnt get a lower reciever handed down?

Id appreciate someone breaking down how i need to do this process. My hopes is that i can get the lower registered to me before crapbag Obama gets in office, then build it at my leisure regardless of any Bans.

18 years of age is all that's neccessary to buy a long gun.

Edit: and a clean record. : )

Correct, but I've just read somewhere on these forums that they have passed, or are passing sometime in october a law that states you must be 21+ to purchase a Lower receiver.... And building a custom AR requires a lower reciever :).

I think it has something to do with the fact that a lower can still be crafted intoa handgun...

Find a friend willing to lend you an upper and stock assembly to DROS it. Missed the part about any new law. ????

The 21+ is the speculation based on the new 4473 coming out that has one list if the firearm is a "receiver" instead of a "rifle".

A CAL legal AR anything is just a long gun. So 18 and a clean record like the other guys say is all you need.

And the only part you need to register and have sent to an FFL or local Gun shop the has an FFL is the lower receiver. Al the other parts of the gun you can have shipped right to you house. Just make sure you get a bullet button with your order and install it before you take it to the range.

And just some advice. I would shop around for some local FFL's. and call around to some different gun shop and ask how much to receive your lower. I'm in the Bay Area and I've seen the prices range from $50 to $150. Most common is about $75 to 100. And as for as who get into office and potential bans. I would drop the money now for a few more stripped lowers for AR-15's and AR-10's and just store them until you have the money to build them out. Your AR-15 lower can be the platform for calibers from .22 up to 7.62x 39 ( maybe larger, I'm not sure) And your Ar-10 I think you can build from like .308 on up near .50. But down quote me on the calibers I just know that the two can accommodate many differet caliber.

You might want to take a look at the new implementations of the 4473 that suggest anyone purchasing a reciever must be 21 and over.

Technically when you do the DROS and 4473 you are not "registering" the weapon.

ok.... So says the form ships out to dealers mid october.. . Its mid october and im looking to buy novemberish anyways so im still stuck as my original question stated... But is my father able to "grandfather" A lower reciever down to me or does it need to be a complete long gun before we can transfer it?

You may wish to read my post on the issues of interfamilial transfer of a lower. I am not an expert, legal or otherwise, but the matter seems straightforward enough that I ventured a personal opinion.

What you wrote there is correct.

Federal rules say that the only kinds of long guns that FFL's can sell to 18 year olds are rifles or shotguns. So stripped lowers are out. But California intra-familial transfers can be free, paperless and unreported for long guns that are not rifles or shotguns.

The only thing is, a parent or grandparent can't buy the lower for you just to get around the prohibition on an FFL selling it to you. That would be a straw purchase. The parent or grandparent can only buy it for you as a bona fide gift. This is a Federal restriction.

If you can somehow get the $, you can still buy a complete ar-10/15 as a long-gun. Armalite is having a sale on 20" uppers for $575. I'd jump on that+ and Aero lower+ a basic lpk + basic stock and stock pats+ DROS=$600 upper shipped+$315 lower shipped+$95 lpk+$130stock stuff+($50 to $100 for fees)~$1200. AR-10s ain't cheap.

You can still buy an assembled lower. If it's got a stock on it, it can be DROS'ed/4473'ed as a long gun rather than an "other" which you would have to be 21 to purchase.

With an assembled lower you can still "build" your gun by adding a bullet button and your upper of choice.
