Hi Matt,

I am new to the site and have a question. I saw a few posts and checked out your website and wanted to know what, if any, advantage if there from getting a complete kit from you as oppsed to a complete rifle? I have zero experience building a FAL let alone an AR so I would need to have someone else build it I guess (I am all thumbs). Is there a cost savings or is it just that it gives people a chance to build it themselves?

We sell our pre-built at a competitive price, otherwise nobody would buy them and they would just buy kits.

Price aside, Fal kits can be difficult to build for the novice. They are NOT like an AR. You will also need some tools, and have access to a lathe in case the shoulder on the barrel needs to be trimmed down a few thousandths of an inch. Headspacing will require a locking shoulder size you probably won't get with your kit.

To build off a kit, here is what it would cost:

Basic kit (un-refinished): $299.99
Type 3 receiver: 329.99
U.S. made parts kit (922R): $139.99
Receiver wrench: $54.99
Buttstock removal tool: $19.99
Gas wrench: $19.99

Total cost: $864.94 + tax.

Thats pretty much the minimum for someone doing a build without already owning the tools, etc. If you have a friend that has them already, that can save you some money. That does not include the locking shoulder you may need to purchase which will run you another $25.

If you can refinish the rifle yourself, then you can save yourself some money. If not, we can do it for $150.00.

Don't forget you will need to have some sort of magazine locking device and a 10 rd. magazine. That will cost you $50 - $75 depending on what you buy and who you buy it from.

Compare that to our finished rifle @ $999.00 + tax. IMO, its a lot easier and potentially cheaper to buy one from us. The only people who really save money on the home builds are the ones who have collected kits or parts over the years, and or have friends that have parts or tools to do the build, refinish the weapon, and know how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.

Hope that helps :)

Hi Matt: I'm interested in picking up a couple of your receivers to do my own builds (I have a friend w/ all the tools and know-how). Do you have the Type 1 Metric and the G1 in stock? Also, I'm not finding the $999 Cali-FAL on your web-site - can you confirm which model it is? Thanks.

We do have Type 3 receivers that will be ready for shipping in about a week. We are not currently making G1 receivers, and have no immediate plans to make them.

Our website is hopelessly out of date, and very confusing to say the least. Our CA $999 rifle is basically the CA Standard or Imbel, depending on which link you click on. That rifle "normally" retails for $1299. Our $999 price (and some other prices) are essentially the sale prices we ran in our Shotgun News ads a year or so ago, and have basically kept those prices the same so long it doesn't really qualify as a sale anymore.

One of these days (I don't know when) we will revert back to our normal selling price for all of our rifles.

Sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't look like we will, but I will have a booth at the Crossroads of the West Gunshow in Costa Mesa that weekend. If there is anything particular you want to see, I can bring it to the show if you want to stop by there!
