What's the section that prevents leaving a loaded handgun in a car?

If you are not in the car...and the car is locked...it is considered a locked container. Second you unlock it thought you are comitting a crime.

A loaded firearm in a car is usually going to be illegal.

Not relevant - 12031 generally prohibits all loaded transport/carry (outside your residence) without CCW, including in a locked container. (One can find exceptions; leaving a loaded handgun in your car will not be one of them.)

OK...what I'm getting at is, I CCW. I know the smart thing to do is to lock my gun up in my car if I am carrying and can't bring it with me somewhere. But, am I required to lock it up if it's one of the guns on my permit?

Then these laws don't apply to you and you can just toss it in your car.

I don't think it's that simple. A lot of various opinions on the matter.

12031 prohibits loading. 12025 only prohibits concealed. 12050 covers CCW permits. There are lots of exemptions in the codes for CCW permit holders. I'd read all of them in their entirety if I had a CCW.

I believe it is just that simple, lock box, glove box, under the seat, center consul, in side a paper bag(old hamburger bag) on the front seat in plain sight. As he said with a CCW.
The bigger responsibility arrives if someone breaks into the car and finds your not so well hidden firearm.

Unless your issuing agency has different instructions, I'd go with this - especially that last sentence.
I think I wouldn't want to unload a carry weapon; lots of manipulation is more occasions for an ND. So locking the weapon in your vehicle (still loaded), when you come to a place you are forbidden to carry, seems the best answer.

I hate to think of what would happen to your CCW license if your pistol gets stolen out of your car...

It would also depend WHERE the vehicle was parked when the theft occurred.->your property, public parking, company parking lot.
This scenario should include prior planning on the part of the individual doing the carrying. Anyone carrying full time should be aware of circumstances where this might occur and make contingency plans in such instances.

WTF, sean penn of all people has a CCW. Like he shows restraint and self control in any situation. this is just BS in my book.

"I leave my back slider open and somebody must of walked in and stole my gun that I leave on the nightstand." Yeah, not true, but better than admitting I left a gun in my car, it got stolen then was used for a crime somewhere else.

I reported two stolen in a car burglary in my driveway. I am now in the process of doing the paperwork to get one back that the cops took away from some low life. They are being quite helpful. No one batted an eye.
I have a CCW that was issued after the original burglary.
Your jurisdiction may vary.
