OC sheriff wants to revoke weapon permits

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - The Orange County Sheriff's Department wants to revoke hundreds of concealed weapon permits.

Department officials say that 146 letters have been sent out to current license holders notifying them that their permits to carry firearms in public are being revoked.

There are currently 1,024 permit holders in Orange County.

A sheriff has discretion to issue concealed weapons permits under state law. Concealed weapon permits increased from 38 to 1998 to 468 the following year under the administration of former Sheriff Mike Carona. By 2006, the number had increased to 1,400.

Carona, who resigned from office in January, was indicted last year on charges of public corruption, witness tampering and fraud. He has pleaded not guilty.

Anyone get a letter? Just curious as to what you're doing about it.

There is a group on www.calccw.com that are coordinating efforts in this matter. If you have received either a revocation letter or a denial for renewal or denial of initial application, go there and hook up with the Orange County folks. This needs to be a united front. Some of the Supervisors are beginning to question what the Sheriff is telling them. At the Board of Supervisors meeting this week, they asked some tough questions of her and heard from some CalCCW members on the issue. She has to come back in November with answers to their questions. It could be a very interesting meeting. The more public participation, the better.

146 isn't exactly hundreds. I'd like to see how much further this goes. 146 could easily cover all the cronies Carona gave CCWs to. Wonder how many non-cronies are going to be victims of this.

P.S. Congratulations on scooping this story. Unfortunately the two dupes are getting more attention. No respect.

146 is up through the letter B. This Sheriff thinks that OC's Good Cause standard should be the same as Los Angeles. Ignore the Carona's Cronies smokescreen. There weren't that many.

You went through the list and counted 146 people with last names starting with either A or B?

Since he liked to party with at least one organized crime boss (OC Weekly, pictured), I wouldn't be surpassed? SURPRISED if he gave all the mob's O.C. residents permits.

The Sheriff is having "notice of intent to revoke your CCW" letters sent out. They are doing it in alphabetical order. When she testified, the number of letters that she was talking about was only up through B. It is my understanding that since then people whose last name starts with F have received letters. Out of over one thousand CCWs in Orange County, only a couple of hundred may have sufficient Good Cause (per the Queen) to retain them.

So nobody on the dais thought to ask if she would be sending 1,024 "notice of intent to revoke your CCW" letters out? Who the hell cares how many she's sent so far, or the letters of the alphabet? It's how many she will ultimately send!

Because anything short 1,024 of that means she is giving some a break from the challenge-response, for some reasons. What are they?

I smell equal protection claims...

Just found out that the G's received letters today. One guy got his first CCW only a month ago and now she wants to yank it. No Carona crony there. Looks like she intends to dump them all, unless you can show extraordinary Good Cause.

How can one's good cause simply evaporate with a new sheriff in town?

Sounds a little sketchy...

Wow. I didnt know that the Orange County Sheriff was such a proponent of open carry. As we all know, if you do not have a license to carry concealed, gun owners must carry exposed. I wonder if the new Sheriff has considered the fallout of 1,000+ former licensees carrying exposed in her jurisdiction at her own request. I wonder if her deparment is prepared for responding to multiple calls reporting 'armed subjects'.

I will be very disappointed if these gun owners quietly accept the Sheriff's decision. It isn't even necessary to have a huge protest. All it would take is a corordinated effort- a hundred or more disinfranchised 'licensees' lawfully carrying their sidearms exposed on the same day in different geographic locations all over Orange County. Repeat as necessary.

Sounds like a symptom of multiple personality disorder.

Emphasis on the plus, if all 1,024 are going down. Considering the 1 month termination from while she was in power, there should be no CCW spared.

I thought she could (legally) only revoke for cause. I didn't think they could be revoked on a whim. She can issue on a whim, but once you got it, don't you got it?
Has there been any progress on that angle?

1024 seems kinda binary, don't it?

The bummer is that she can tell them to pound sand and they can't do a thing about it...she doesn't work for them.

As far as: How can one's good cause simply evaporate with a new sheriff in town?

It's simple' PC 12050 allows the CLEO to determine what makes good cause. Today's sheriff may think "Personal Protection" is GC, but in November, with an election, a new sheriff comes along and determine it's no longer GC and all such permits get pulled. Until we have Shall Issue in CA, no one's permit is safe.

Here’s a good analysis of the OC CCW situation. This is “the” blog that all OC politicos read; I suggest adding a comment to the post. She (the new sheriff) is already changing her tune a bit, so more public comment could help the situation. You can use a pseudonym and don’t need to use a real email address where is asks for one.
