View Full Version : Which Upper for my Build?

So, I've decided to build up an AR type in the next few months but I'm not sure what caliber I should go with. I was thinking about putting something together that would be pretty accurate, so I was thinking about putting a longer barrel on it, perhaps a 20"-24". Make it look like a "Sniper style" setup...

What do you guys think?

All opinions welcome!!!

Along those lines but more like a 655 with a heavy barrel, is what I was visualizing...

.223/5.56 with a 24 inch bull barrel, smooth handguard. Flat top upper with a nice 10x50 scope setup.

Flat top upper with 18" med. barrel chambered in 5.56. Use a 1-7" or 1-8" twist for stabalizing heavier bullets. Mid length gas system. 1-4x illuminated scope.

My current AR has a 20" bull barrel and a fixed power 10X scope. It's great for long range, but is too heavy for carrying around and is pretty much a one-trick pony. My next build will have the features I listed above to make it more of an all purpose rifle.

I'd say start with 223

5.45 = bigtime savings on ammo
6.5 Grendel = mucho power to capitalize on longer barrel platform
.243 = hella sweet deer rifle.

5.56= like everyone else

I'm amazed 6.8 SPC isn't on your list. I see all sorts of articles on it these days...

He said "accurate", "sniper" and "longer barrel". 6.8 SPC is a great close quarters round, not a long distance accurate round.

6.5 Grendel fits all his needs, but if you don't reload, go with a nice varmint .223/5.56 upper.

Sounds you need a 6.5 Grendel in your life! ;)

It sounds like it will fit your needs well, and it's something a little different. The 5.56 will definitely do the job, but it's the same-old same-old. I would definitely suggest building from parts if your going for the 6.5G. Prices on complete uppers are outrageous. I'm building a 6.5G right now, and the last thing I have to buy is my barrel/bolt combo from AA. I guess this could bias my opinion though.

Oh, and .243 is a short action cartridge. Building an AR-10 type rifle would be a little excessive, but thats just my opinion.

I ran out of poll options.

The forum only allows 10, so I put an "other" option on there...

That was one of the uppers I was looking at, though. Are you familiar with the 6.8?

Benefits? Drawbacks?

Do you reload?

If not, ignore any other caliber than .223/5.56

If you do, get 6.5grendel with a 20" barrel. You'll be able to push out to 800m without a hitch.

If you're going to go with 5.56, either a varmint bull barrel for top accuracy/distance or build an SPR for a perfect crossover...

I just started a 6.5 Grendel build. So far I have ordered everything for the upper aside from the barrel/bolt from AA. I did a lot of research and the ballistics on the Grendel are outstanding so I decided to go that route. I don't reload YET but with the prices of factory AA Grendel Ammo that will be changing soon. This will be far from a plinker (I have my 5.56 for that) so I will be starting off with some factory loads and slowly acquire the reloading necessities.

I definitely agree though... if you want a good shooter that doesn't have THAT high of ammo prices and you don't reload go with the .223/5.56.

Just have to add... This week is going to be like x-mas for me! I CAN'T WAIT! http://forum.e46fanatics.com/images/smilies/excited.gif:willy_nilly:

I'm really surprised that the .243 and the .25 WSSM didn't get any votes thus far...

Thanks for the input, everyone!!!

It will be my first "build" but I've already got the 5.56 boxed checked with my BWK...

It's not that I don't like the .223 cartridge, I just thought there might be something better out there.

I've been reading up on the 5.45x39mm and that looks like it might be something to consider.

Then again, the .25 WSSM looks like a good time... :44:

See, this is why I posted the topic. I'm so indecisive...

I'll vote get one each on the .243 for deer hunting with an AR. People will love that.
