Ok- so im not into hunting and so im not looking for that type. Im just looking to defend when SHTF or night of the living dead is going on.

I am in the middle of my first AR--15 build so got that covered.

Now my question......I've seen pics of the Saiga .223 and GEEZ! Thats a nice black gun! I also qualified with a Ruger Mini Ranch 14.

I want to get another rifle...so help me choose. I dont know much about either. Again, it will be used in the same fashion as the AR- mainly for home defense and target shooting. I know that I can use these rifles if I ever pick up hunting wild boar too....but thats just another reason to get another gun! :D

saiga 7.62x39. AKs deserve to be in their native caliber :D

Saigas are inexpensive and run well.

An AKwith a MMG might be a better choice, if you have or can legally acquire large capacity mags.

Why not a shotgun? Dependable, simple, nice price, and you have so many options.

How about a 308 like this but you can't have mine.

For target shooting, I'd go with a 7.62x39 or .223 for cheaper ammo than .308. That is if you plan to shoot alot. For hunting, maybe look into a .308. What's your budget? For SHTF, I personally would grab my PTR-91 in .308. They are tough, accurate, & pack some good punch. You could hunt with it too. They run about $1000-$1250.

When the night of the living dead dudes are knocking on your door you'll wish you had the 8-shot 12g pump.
If you want anice rifle take a look at the savage brand.

Unless there are 9 of them ;)

Thanks for the responses. Love the pics of the .308

I've got the shotgun(actually its in DROS now)- Remington 870 Express HD (all black synthetic with 6+1)

Budget is not to break the bank. No more then $500

So here is my plan. I want a rifle for every situation I can think of.

.22 long rifle (cheap ammo, easy to shoot for wife and daughter, can use to hunt small game if needed)

AR-15 - must I say more....... :D

12 gauge- hear the "rack" and need I say more :D

Mini 14 or Saiga- all purpose and in .223 (since I already have the ammo)

An AK or a SKS. Ammo is readily available and both rifles are very reliable. Some guys down in Texas use the SKS when hunting hogs!

If you are only looking to have a few rifles (for now...), and you already have an AR, I really don't see the point in getting a Saiga or Mini14 in .223. The AR will outshoot both of them.

If you're just looking to get a mean looking but cheap plinker to kick around and not worry about your friends jacking it up, then get a WASR whatever in 5.45 Russian. The ammo for that is super duper ultra cheap. Or get something in 7.62x39, the ammo for that is still cheaper than .223 (if you go this way I would get a Saiga or SKS). Of course, if you don't actually have to worry about PAYING for the ammo because you are able to shoot .223 from work or something, get a Galil - nicest AK pattern .223's in my opinion.

If you're thinking you might want to start stretching out the range some, then look into Savage 10fp's. Your $500 would only buy you the rifle, you would still need a scope, but that way you could start doing some precision shooting as well as basic plinking (or at least some precision plinking;))

on a tight budget go SKS, RUSSIAN OR YUGO. SPEND REST OF MONENEY ON CASE OF AMMO!

+1 that. Everyone should at least have one just in case something bad happens.

As a BWK-92 I owner, I take issue with this statement!!!

JK :D

In all honesty, though, they're both good cartriges for different reasons. Do some reasearch and see which caliber appeals to you more...

5.56mm is faster but 7.62x39 has more energy. Ammo is cheap for both...

Whichever "floats your boat", really...

Pick up a Saiga in 7.62x39. They are cheap and reliable.
