View Full Version : Bolt carrier didn't go back after the last round fired?

I have a Stag, AR15 5.56 and using 2 mags 10/20 and 10/30.
Yesterday I went to the range and I notice on the 10/20 mag, after the last round fired, the bolt carrier didn't go back as usual, and then when I switched to the 10/30 mag, it went to the back after the last round fired.
Does it mean that my 10/20 mag is broken that I should not use it anymore, or is there any fix on these? Thanks in advance.

Just because the bolt doesn't lock open after the last shot is no reason to toss the mag. If you can't figure out the problem by examining the rifle/magazine, ask one of us "old-timers" to have a look at it for you. :)

Yeah, I kinda think that way too, but it's weird, no problem at all beside after the last round?

It could be the follower on the mag. Test with out without ammo in the gun.

Insert emtpy mag and pull charging handle....it should lock back. If not the follower is not hitting the bolt catch.

If it's not the follower maybe disassemble the mag stretch out the spring a bit reassemble and see if that cures it. I had a weak magazine spring in one mag and sometimes it was hit or miss on locking after the last round. I did this fix and it seemed to fix the problem.

^^^^ Also what he said.

If your spring is weak it might not be pushing the follower up fast enought for it to catch.

sound like you had a squb round. Just enough for the round to clear the barrell but not enough to shove the bolt back. Check your ammo.

Ammo is fine (Federal XM193 55gr), because when I use the 10/30, the bolt carrier was lock back after the last round fired. Thanks.

Yeah, you need to function it manually and see if the bolt will lock back with those mags.

It might be the rifle is short stroking just enough that it can't lock back those mags, or there might be an issue with those mags.

Test the rifle as follows:
Load one round in the mag.
Insert the mag into the open rifle.
Charge the rifle.
Fire the single chambered round.
Look for the bolt to do one of three things: Lock back with the bolt catch in front of the bolt (proper operation), lock back with the bolt catch in between the bolt lugs and carrier (short stroking) or not lock back at all (extreme short stroking, bad magazine or bad bolt catch/bolt catch parts.

You should be able to do this 10 times in a row and expect the same results each time.
If one mag has problems and the other does not, then you have pinpointed the problem.

you also guaranteed that later down the road you will have problems with that magazine not feeding rounds correctly. If you strech a spring you are actually weakening it not refreshing it, and it will be weaker than before. Just a FYI

I agree with you. I should have elaborated a bit more on not being a permanent fix. Just a temporary fix to see if it was a weak magazine spring. If it cures the problem then get the replacement parts kit or replace the entire mag. I'm interested to know the outcome. Hope you solve your problem soon!
