Naw, not really as everybody is different.

I recently purchased my first wheel gun (686+ 4") and am hooked on revolver over semi auto. Maybe its just because its new but I really love this gun. What a great shooter. Comparable in accuracy to my 1911 (in my hand thats saying a lot), and easy to shoot. If you haven't experienced revolver shooting do yourself a favor and spend a day shooting one.

Yep. My 686 (also a 4") is my favorite gun of any that I own, with the 308 bolt-action being #2.

I don't carry my 686, however -- unless I'm in the woods/mountains, as it is my most powerful handgun (I also have a few 9mm and 40 S&W).

Great gun. And the fact that I don't have to scurry to pick up my brass is an added bonus.

I'm actually working on getting my first revolver. (Actually I have a Ruger single 6 22 rim fire). I'm looking at the smith 986. 9mm with moon clips. 7 shots. It's expensive but nothing worth having in the gun world is. Second option is the Ruger LCR 9. I have plenty of ammo and can reload 9mm if I need to.

Like OP I am / was a 1911 kind of guy. One day I walked into Trader Sports with money in hand, intent on purchasing yet another 1911 when I happened to glance at the revolver counter and saw a 4" 686+. I remember thinking this was a handsome revolver and before you know it, without thinking, strictly on impulse, I put the money down and DROS's the 686.

I spent the next ten days kicking myself, thinking why did I do that I wanted a .45 oh well, you can sell it after pick up, gee why did I waste the money, etc., etc.

On pick up day the owner knew I was conflicted about the purchase so he threw in a box of Miwall 158 grain jacketed hollow points and off I went to the range.

It took only one cylinder and I knew I would never ever give this gun up.

Now I own four Smiths.

I have to agree that there is something special about the visceral experience of shooting a revolver, whether double or single action. 356 magnum is a sweet spot for me, not too much, not too little.

Old western revolvers are the best, especially when complemented with a lever gun in the same caliber.

.45 LC or just .45 Colt for you purists.

I have many revolvers and they are all fun to shoot, except for my little J-Frame.

Honestly, for every day and even 80% of range days, I prefer semi-auto.

357 revolvers and 45 acp 1911's are the only center fire handguns I am interested in at this point. With a practical limit of 10 rounds the wonder nines just don't appeal any more.

As I recall the cylinders are the same size. The 7 shot just has less material between each chamber. Obviously not a concern, those 7 shots have been around a long while. I see no reason to not get a 7 all things being equal.

Wow.. People still use speedloaders?

Lol.. I know they do having met some shooting "Classic" division in ICORE and dominating while doing so.. "ICORE" you ask?

International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts...

Or basically a combination of Bianchi Cup, USPSA, and Steel Challenge..

I've competed a number of times.. and when I could practice I was able to finish in the mid 50's of over 200 competitors.. lately I am lucky to break the top 100..

Over the years I have used with moon clips:

S&W 610-2
S&W 627-4
S&W 627-5
S&W 929

Also at a regional I used:

S&W 586 with Speedloaders

Richmond usually has a few ICORE matches at the beginning of the year.. usually Jan-May.. If you think shooting a wheelgun is fun, shooting one fast is even more fun.

Why get 6 when you can get 7? The design is mechanically sound. I'll tell ya, the 686 is just beautiful and shoots fantastic too.

The first and only change I made to it was to put Altamont wood grips with the silver S&W medallion on it.

That's a prop gun from the show supernatural "the Colt" supposedly the first revolver created by Samuel Colt who in the show was a monster hunter in the past just like the main characters are now. That one seems to be a resin model that has no trigger, they do have a blank firing version that has a trigger.
