It's that time of year when a few Remington 700s with the Milspec R-5 barrel hit the market, and Rettings in Culver City has a few -- with the deep green spiderweb H-S precision stock -- around $1100 -- less than HALF what an H-S costs.

I just picked one up two weeks ago. :D Does that mean I got old stock or did I jump early on the new? My SN# starts 666; does that mean is evil? :43:

Not Evil but a HUGE bargain in the Precision rifle field!

$1100 is a bit high, I got mine for $949.00 shipped to my FFL.

I just bought good quality base and rings; any thoughts on top grade glass? How about break-in? Recent threads keep me guessing. Should I forgo the good glass and just get some more rifles?;)

A good rifle derseves better (than rifle) glass. that being said, I am running a Millett LRS-1 on my Rem700 5R. I know its not the best, but at the moment, thats what I can afford. Plus Im still waiting for NF to move their arses and make the FFP NXS!

Buying from gunbroker or snipercountry and shipping to FFL here will probably incur shipping and transfer fees that will bring the price very close -- (you may have a "buddy" who transfers rifles for you for free -- ship it to a Turners and add at least $100 bucks to it)
Another Calgunner was in the store and if had not picked up something on a PPT from me was tempted to pick an R-5 up.

There is great value to being able to walk in and pick up your rifle before you decide to buy it sight unseen based on internet reviews.

I didn't memorize the exact price.
Like any gunstore, I'm sure they will discuss price. I know many guys are interested in this gun and was excited that you could just walk in an get one.

When I bought mine, there was not a single one to be found in Cali. I called every store and none of them had even heard of the 5R. I was forced to buy from gunbroker. As for the price, even after the transfer fees, it cost me $999 out the door.

When was this? I remember the posts about the 5-Rs and I thought no one had them here?

Top grade glass
Optical Quality and Price rated.

1-10

1 BSA, Tasco, Simmons, a whole crapload of others
2
3
4 Mueller
5 Nikon, Bushnell, Burris
6 Sightron
7
8 Leupold
9 Night Force, IOR, Swarovski, Ziess, Khales
10 Schmidt & Bender, US Optics

Personal ratings, have used or owned all listed glasses. no flaming necessary.

If you really want the best.. get the SN3 from US Optics.. It will cost a liver but your jaws will drop when compared to anything that has visually grazed your retinas. The glasses are polished with the Tears of a Thousand Virgins.

BTW I have done a LOT of business with Remington over the years (since back when I worked for a store in NY) and they were the WORST to get a good price from unless you ordered at distributers volume. If you ordered three rifles, then Herman's (our Big 5) would have the same gun selling for what Rem charged us as a Dealer's fee. But as I said, I don't know what they are exactly selling these for I was trying to decide if a GSG5 was worth it when I have a spikes dedicated 22 coming.

I just knew some were interested in the gun and thought I'd let those near Culver City they could go see it.

$1100 in-store price and $950 shipped is a huge difference.

$1100 + Tax = ~$1180
$950 + $50 transfer = $1000

That's a difference of $180 or about 15% of the rifle.

Nobody in their right mind would transfer to Turners.. but FFLs and others promoting them always like to quote them to make themselves seem like "the best deal in town."

you forgot DROS.

$1100 + 8.25% + $35 (DROS) = $1225

Where are you guys getting a transfer for $50? The gunstores in LA are now charging as much as $125 just for the transfer.

Also, again, I didn't see the price -- RETAIL on REm website is 1149

You've got to find the home based ffl's. Go on gunbroker and use ther lookup ffl option and it should come up with some in your area and they usually list a price. I do my transfers at a home based ffl called pennington firearms in the murrieta/lake elsinore area. He is a very nice guy and charges 50 bucks for a transfer and he does oll's too.

I live near Culver city -- all the cheap FFls on the list are far from here. Most places dfon't WANT your gunbroker business (Turners is up to 125 or 150 or a transfer.

it would be $50 in gas to get to lake elsinore
