I have been thinking about selling a Winchester 1890. The gun was manufactured in the 30's. Am I required to go through an FFL for the transfer on a gun this old?

I don't think so, not if it is 50+ years old.

ETA - Let me qualify that. For a face-to-face sale, you can generally conduct a "paperless" (i.e. not involving an FFL and DROS paperwork) sale of suitably-old longarms between two CA residents in-state not otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms.
