I finally got out to Chabot rifle range today to test out my new .22lr upper receiver.

From this post: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=120475 I was asked to give a range report here.

What I bought is this: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=394842

These are selling for about $300 on gunbroker only as far as I know.

Ok bottom line after shooting it: I'm impressed.

First of all I got sub-inch groups at 50 yards.

I tried a variety of ammo types. The best results was with Federal Gold Medal

The worst was Winchester Super X Target
http://www.natchezss.com/images/products/WNX22LRPP.jpg

I also tried some CCI standard velocity 40 grain and Olin white box from the CMP standard 40 grain.

The magazine fed the FGM perfectly, never a hiccup. The Winchester had a couple failures to eject as well as worse accuracy.

I took the magazine apart before I shot it and found it was full of oil. I cleaned it, stretched out the spring, put in a little dry graphite lube and screwed it back together.

I didn't have to tweak anything else.

The bad part about the upper is I had to crank the windage all the way to the right and I still was hitting about an inch to the left of the bull. I'm using a detachable handle made by Armalite. I sighted in my Trijicon Reflex with the amber triangle and that got me point of aim hits which blew out the little red x ring in the target at 50 yards.

The other slightly negative thing was when seating a loaded mag it sometimes wouldn't snap in to my Bushmaster lower unless I retracted the bolt while I pushed up. Not really a big deal though.

I didn't have a scope and might have gotten even better results with one, but for now I'm very happy with the results with this upper.

thanks for the RR and glad to see it worked out for you... now i'm on the fence only because i just procured a 10/22 and already have a ciener kit.
did you only use the mag it came with? or have you tried BDM mags through it as well?
thanks for taking the time to write this up!

Thanks for the range report. Mine would not feed any of the cheap Walmart ammo. While at the range, another shooter who had problems with his Spike's AR .22 upper suggested this:

It worked flawlessly for the several magazines I ran through the upper. I was using Black Dog Mags. Didn't have time to do accuracy tests or take pics/videos. It was a hell of a lot of fun once the Winchester was introduced.

Price is great if you don't mind not having a threaded barrel, or the plastic upper receiver. The barrel is a good diameter, with double that under the handguards. Here's mine.

69Mach1, how were your iron sights aligned? Mine were off by more than I like, but I intend to use the optic most of the time.

I only used the one mag that came with it. Not sure how other mags will work.

As with any .22 semi-auto, it is very picky about ammo. As I suspected, it shot better with the higher priced (if any .22lr can be considered high priced) ammo.

Click the links in my original post to see more photos of the upper, including one of the very heavy profile under the handguards.

I just got my Velocity upper a few days ago. I'm looking forward to shooting this. My M1S .22LR dedicated upper and Ciener .22LR conversion seem to like the winchester thunderbolt .22LRs. No misfeeds. Hopefully the same with this upper. My only gripe about this upper is that you need to hold in the insert in when opening up the rifle or else the spring/rod will go flying. :D

I thought it was my understanding that most of these 22 uppers didnt like lead ammo

Can someone explain what an "AUTOTRIP" is used for? I heard that will keep the unit conversion unit together.

The auto trip is only added onto the bolt when the conversion unit is being used on a full auto lower.

Berg, that's an old picture. It's now sporting a railed handguard, a Tango Down VHG, and a TruGlo red dot sight. I do have it somewhat dialed in and unfortunately it looks like the red dot is located quite a bit left of center. I think we may have the same problem.

Black Dog mags worked great with the Winchester ammo, and it's not too bad at $22 for a brick at Big5, so I can live with that. I never got a chance to use the supplied mag that came with it.

Berg could you provide a link directly to the Gunbroker listing for the .22 AR uppers (I have issues with the other forum/board you linked ) :)

The price went up a little though.

I don't have a AR or a Spikes, but that Winchester Xpert Hollowpoint is crap in my 10/22, jammed constantly for me and for a guy who had a Ruger Mk III pistol. Turners has Fiocchi at $23 a brick, not a single failure to eject or misfire with that.
