I was at the range today with my NHM91 and had 3 jams out of about 150 rounds where the bullet ended up sideways instead of in the barrel. I think the tip of the bullet is hitting the back of the barrel (or something) because the jammed bullets had scars right on the tip (the hollow point is kind of crunched in on one side). I also saw that same scar on a bullet that loaded correctly that I ejected. Is this common? Is there a fix?

Were they all with the same magazine?

That is a good question. I used 2 mags but I did not think to look.

Sounds like one of the magazines has worn/damaged lips that don't allow the bullet to feed onto the bullet guide properly. Try different magazines and keep track of which ones are being used for malfunctions.

Magazines are often the week link in any semi-auto.

You are mistaken. AKs do not jam. Are you sure you weren't firing an AR?

The dude in the van who sold it to me said it was an AK!

It is an NHM91 (Chinese, stamped receiver). I'm not sure what "NDS or flat" means...

NDS is a company that makes stripped AK receivers. "Flat" refers to an AK receiver that hasn't been bent yet; IIRC they are considered 80% receivers.

If you are using cheapo chinese 10rd mags try replacing the followers with the tapco ones this made a huge difference with my WASR. But beware!!! from my experience some of those mags are just bad. I have one that no matter what I've tried it will jam.

I have two steel 10 round Chinese AK mags from the local gun show with Tapco followers. They are worthless Jam-O-Matics.

Like bohiki said, try FMJ.

all the chinese mags ive ever seen are 5 rounders none of them came from china as 10 rounders they were modified here by chopping the follower many have burs remaining where the follower was cut or ground off

also there are other ones that look like chinese but are not blued but are blacked with a thick looking coating i believe they are egyptian make and are fairly poor in my opinion

It seems like the angle of the feed lips would be the issue if the mag is feeding the round too low, I'm not sure a new follower would do much to change that angle. I'm not sure of anything really, just guessing out loud. :online2long:

EVERY ak problem Ive EVER HAD can be traced to crap mags and HP ammo. With a 10/30 made out of a REAL MAG and nice FMJ ammo Ive never had a problem.

Ever.
