Alright, I need to make my future AK-74 Deleted and I need some help. So far I have decided on the following: ACE folding stock, some foregrip, Vortex Strikefire. What is the best side-rail scope mount thats out there or that you have had good experience with? What railed handuards are the best quality and look the nicest? I am also in need of a bad *** pistol grip and possibly another muzzle device besides the standard 74 brake. Obviously MY opinions on what looks good or not will be different from YOURS, but I would like to be more aware of available options, even for categories I didnt list. Suggest away! :43:

Awhile back I remember reading about some company that was designing a top rail that fit over the AK receiver cover and attached to the rear sight base. It looked like a great compromise for those who didn't want to bother with installing a side mount. I'll see if I can find it.

Glad to hear it.
All you need for your AK is a few cases of ammo then.

I actually have 4 different siderails for my two AK's, one WASR and one Saiga

All are fine, one is a cheap-o airsoft accessorie i bought on ebay and mounted a cheap-o tasco on for my WASR for 100 yard range work, the rail was $10 + shipping and the scope like $25 used...lol, i dunno how well it holds zero since the WASR probably is more like a 4-5 MOA gun out of the box

I have a rail for the Saiga from RAA, a UTG AK rail and some other random no-name rail, all three of those are beefier than the airsoft ones, of course. All of those cost $30-45 range.

The Saiga and UTG rails are all holding up fine, hold zero as well as an AK can...the 3rd random no-name rail is a QR type and the QR is finicky with the back nut tightness

I believe AK's should be kept simple (I guess the term nowadays is KISS). I decided to make my first Romy build into a 74 look-alike with synthetic furniture and it's a great looking rifle, but, IMO, Telescoping stocks and rails don't belong on AK's. The rugged simplicity of the AK is only harmed when "useless" accessories are added.

I'm not a huge fan of rails on an AK either, but then again it's not mine.
So mod away to your hearts content...LOL

Here's a scope mount you can look into... even though you have a side mount... this is just different, and kinda looks cool too. I plan to get one for my SKS and add a long eye refief scope....

Synthetic stock set (lighter rifle!)
MMG (fixed-mag can not be bad***)
EOTech or Aimpoint
Ultimak under that
J-Tac 47 brake from Primary Weapon Systems
Wolff extra-power recoil spring
Red Star Arms adjustable trigger

Lots of ammo, cause you're there. Between the J-Tac and the spring, I noticed a huge difference in how smooth my AK is. I don't have an Ultimak, I have a side rail and wish I'd gone Ultimak. I don't have a RSA trigger... yet.

I have an EOTech... and an Aimpoint that arrived yesterday (with a little bit of Afghanistan attached, unless I miss my guess) that I've got a low-rise mount on the way for. The EOTech makes shooting almost too damn easy... Focus on the target, where the dot is the hole winds up (unless you're too close).

It's your gun and this is the USA, put all the crap on it you want.

Just realize that 'tactical', contrary to most posts here, is what YOU DO and nothing more. Taking the gun to the range is not 'tactical'.;)

a cheaper version of the krebs rail is the beryl style rail.very solid and around $65-75. i have yet to hear anyone say anything good about ak railed hg's. mostly i see complaints. ace stock is an excellent choice (skeleton, not ar). the internal adapter is the cleanest. requires dremelling off the stock tang. check out ergo grips for p/g. hk style in hard or squishy.

I went ahead and tacticalafied my Vector AK with folding stock, rails, green laser and a whole bunch of other "cool" stuff. After about 4 months with it, I stripped everything off, sold all the components and went back to the stock configuration. I just felt that I had violated the weapon's identity and that Mikhail would kick me in the тестикулы if he had seen what I had done to his epic design. Just my opinion of course. Like McCain's unworthy opponent said, it was like this:

So I wasn't the only one thinking it. I like AKs, but IMO, they're a pain to "tacticalize."

You guys seriously need to quit with the bashing. the OP made it clear in is post that he didn't want to hear a bunch of people whining about what they like to do with their AKs. If you don't like it, buy another AK and keep it stock to make things in balance. :TFH:

Keep it because ammo is cheaper -

And more powerful and reliable.

I had UTG rails and they worked well, held tight, but as far as folding stocks, they dont look right unless they are factory ones, the folding stocks that utilize the factory rear tang just look funny IMO.

AKjunkie, on that 1st pic of one of your AKs, what exact lower handuard do you have?

i have US made handguards from KVAR with the Heat Shields. they are identical copies to the Original Bulgarian hand guards. the heat shields really work.

i've tried other US made plastic/ polymer handguards and they all melted.

the Rail U see underneath is homemade.. i basically sawed off a weaver rail desgined for the AR standard handguard. filed it down to fit the contour of my handguard. drill some holes and mounted it with hardware that came with the weaver rail.

i did this mod about 10yrs ago to my rifles and several of my friends AK rifles. still tight to this day.

i did this mod way before anyone was selling / Mfging AK handguards with built in rails.

if i had to mod another set of handguards.. i go the same route. like i said, the Heat shields really work.

[:TFH:mode]Uh, posting for comments on a particular gun configuration doesn't make you immune from negative comments...you know about "opinions". You're likely to hear both positive and negative comments.

When your posts asks about making the gun more "bad-donkey", you're leaving youself wide open;)[/:TFH:mode]

AK's, like FAL's but unlike AR's, work better without anything from Ultimax, Tapco, or the other company I can't remember that makes cheap stocks for Mosin's, Mauser's, etc.

The ak designer made a basic gun that will run forever and designed it to be used by soldiers with no sophistication nor education. That's what OP has to work with. I say, stick with accessories that came with the rifle...i.e., if you want to scope it, use the rivited rail and a Commie scope...it works better that way.

Otoh, read my first post in the thread...if looks make a better gun, go for it. If you feel that it's the shooter more than the gun that makes the impression, buy more ammo and practice.

i ordered Directly from ACE's websites...

before everyone else was carrying their products.

before ACE had a online shopping cart.. i had to call/Fax my order in.. this was close to 10+ plus years ago.

did all the US parts conversion Pre Y2K.

I have a heat shield inside my front handguard, and haven't had any heat problems... but I don't really hold on the handguard anyway. At least the plastic hasn't shown any signs of melting. My stock isn't a K-Var, it's some other brand of US-made stock with a heat shield.

NO way. Vest doesn't match the pants, no sign of trauma plate, hat's wrong, and he's standing on 1 foot.

Lol.

FWIW (mostly because I'm wound too tight :p): No trauma plate 'cause that vest won't carry armor, but it's a handy way to carry mags (and a pair of gloves and a Leatherman...) I'm not standing on one foot, really... I'm walking and shooting.

Good Lord, if I knew the pic was of a moderator I wouldn't have tried (and apparently stumbled) for a bit of levity. I also need to re-study my vests.
