Call the local news channels first! Let them know a 2A activist group is doing something to reclaim their neighborhood! They'll be there thinking some vigilante group is going to hunt down criminals, when instead they'll find open carriers picking up garbage..and teaching about 12025, 12031, and clark 1996..and that 2A thingy.

However, I don't mean this to include the 7 calguners who recently indicated they were going to pick Obama as their lesser of two evils evil as I myself am still trying to decide between the Libertarian or Consitution Party candidates (as I expect Obama to take CA with or without my voting for McCain) :D

I think the key to not being harassed in CA would be having at least one person ready to record the event. Hopefully the mere presence of the camera(s) would be enough to deter any violation of the rights of the activists.
