Was at the range the other day firing a friend's Mosin and impressed at what the 7.62X54R can do. Now, I'm interested in getting a rifle that's chambered in 54R and fire under 1.5 MOA. I've heard nasty things about Mosin's accuracy, even the Finnish Mosin and Romanian SVD aren't so hot either. I don't really have 3500$ to spend on a true Russian or Chinese SVD, so I was wondering what are my opinions in a 7.62X54R rifle under 1.5 MOA.
Thanks in advance.

This one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GShG-7.62_machine_gun) :43:.

More realistically, SVT40 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVT-40).

SVT-40 isn't going to give you amazing accuracy although it is a really cool rifle.

Just get a 91/30 sniper and glass bed the action. Remember that battle packs of 50 year old com-block surplus ammo will usually work against you in the accuracy dept. 1-1.5MOA should be attainable though.

Probably not as accurate as you'd like, but sporting type guns were once chambered for the round. In WWI the Russians were so desperate for arms, they had a lot of people make mosins (e.g. Westinghouse, Remington, Winchester)

You might have found yourself a collecting niche that will take years to satisfy.

I would say Finnish M39, but if you don't want to go that route you could re-barrel a 91/30. They're on sale at Big 5 right now for $69! :D

can't romanian PSL's achieve 1.5 MOA at 100 with the right ammo? or was it more like 2-2.5 MOA?

I've heard nasty things about Mosin's accuracy After some fine tuning on my 91/30 it shoots about 1-2MOA with Bulgarian LB. I have had pretty good luck accurizing my WWII rifles, my K98 that used to shoot 6in groups can now shoot 1MOA groups with Yugo 8mm sniper ammo. It's a long frustrating road to get this things to shoot so well but it's very well worth it.

Yes it can. I've read range reports that got close to 1 MOA with the Russian
7N1 and 148 grn. Wolf.

Yes you can, and it's already been done. A few of the members have transferred in Russian SVD Dragunov Tigers. I think there was one person who was getting a Chinese NDM-86.

Don't they have every single evil feature in the book and a detachable mag? Or am I missing something?

Tiger's don't have anything attached to the muzzle. The only evil feature is the thumbhole stock. There are ways of taking care of that.

Another member has added a flash suppressor front sight base onto his Tiger and made mods to have a fixed mag rifle.

I once saw some video of a guy shooting his PSL and once he went down range to check his groups, 4 were in the same hole and there was 1 extreme flier. What type of groups do you get with your rifles 69mach1?

From everything I have read, the PSL and SVD rifles are on a par with each other in terms of accuracy, which with the right ammo, is quite good :D

It would probably help to not have a barrel mounted bipod- someone made a harris adapter for the handguard somewhere- on here maybe? That looked like it would work well. I messed with one- the PSL barrel is thicker and heavier than it looks!

I would love to have an SVT-40. I think they're super-cool. The cool factor of rifles has gone down dramatically since they started putting pistol grips on them. The M1A, SKS, SVT-40, etc, were the last generation of really cool battle rifles.

I'm a bit confused now, after doing some reading.....there's alot of people online that are claiming that PSL shoots almost as accurate as a SVD. I was always under the impression that PSL are just beefed up AK that fired 54R that generally shoots 3~5 inch grouping at 100 yard. Or is it kind of like Mosins, where the quality of Romanian PSL varies a lot from gun to gun? Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks
