View Full Version : Air Rifle Suggestions

I'm thinking about getting an air rifle to shoot in the back yard; pests, paper targets, etc. I assume the more FPS the better, but I've heard that once you get around 1000 FPS you can hear the "crack" (report) of the gun being fired. I know it would not be as loud as a regular gun (obviously), but I don't want the neighbors wondering what I'm doing.

Anyway, suggestions as to brand, model, pump vs. any other type of mechanism, etc., would be appreciated. Thx.

Beware, some air rifles are louder than .22lr rifles!

stay away from the chinese stuff, they are fast but not accurate. rws is the most common and a fair price if you like the break downs. if you like pumps i am fond to beeman.

If you are worried about sound then how about high power airsoft. I have a couple Co2 airsoft that do close to 600fps and are almost dead silent

+ 1 on the 1,000 FPS rifles being (too) loud in the suburbs.
I use a Benjamin HB22 pistol..3-8 pumps variable. 3-4 pumps is quiet and good for across the backyard target shooting, tin can attacks, etc.
Always seem to run out of CO2 cartridges before pellets. I hate that.
I prefer the pumps for fun.

Someone makes an air rifle with a sound modulator (suppressor!) right now- I can't remember the mfr., but it was talked about on this board already.

I've seen some of the damage my buddies air rifles can do, it's pretty insane and they are all setup with air gun silencers which is legal and they are dead silent with the same power of a 22LR, it's pretty nutty seeing him blow right through 2 inches of wood, even blew a whole clean through a washing machine and that's including the STEEL drum inside the washer!

I have a Gamo and it's decent, and their Whisper model has a built in suppressor. However, be careful firing a 1000fps air rifle in your back yard, as other posts have said, those pellets can go right through fences and other stuff.

I have the Taurus Co2 handgun. With the standard cartridge it will do 400 but with high pressure close to 600. It has no blowback though so that it can utilize the full force. Those Kokusai's are insane. At that price you might as well buy a Spikes dedicated .22
