If one installs the union that allows the AR stock to go on the AK and sets it up with the AR stock are there any legal issues to be concerned with? (primarily regarding installation of additional US made parts) With the stock fully retracted it is still over 30 inches.

If you are talking about adding an M4 style collapsible stock on an AK, the AK has to have a fixed magazine, as a detachable mag AK with collapsible stock = AW. If you are putting on an A2 or some other AR fixed stock like an ACE, then you are good to go.

It already kind of depends on how your rifle is configured, ie. which AK you have / are thinking of buying, as some AK already come 922(r) compliant from the distributer, so adding another US part really doesn't matter.

You aren't having to make a rifle 922(r) compliant because you want to add a US made part, it's whether the new part changes the configuration of the rifle in such a way that it no longer falls under the categorisation of being a "sporting rifle", a category defined and therefore permitted to be imported into the US by the feds.

IMO, a collapsible AR stock on an AK looks funky anyway.
