I got to handle this puppy backstage at the SHOT show (barrett had it OUT of the limelight) and my buddy Lou is completely Gaga over it. It is a comely beast, but
1) My torn rotatror cuffs don't WANT to shoot 338 lapua anymore
b) My torn bank account don't want me to shoot 338 LM anymore.

That being said, one IS on its way to me and Lou for shooting evaluation. I think after he shoos 100 rounds he'll be satisfied.

Last year, when the state got around to banning every .50-caliber rifle, Barrett had already created the .416 Barrett, a new caliber for the Model 99 single-shot, bolt-action rifle.

Curious, when was this article written? Also, FYI, it's not every .50 rifle, just .50 BMG rifles.

Written over a year ago.

The context is: CA bans semis. Barrett makes 50BMG Bolt guns, then CA gets around to making those illegal too -- It's from the Barrett magazine and about the Barrett rifles and why Ronnie designed the 416. I now about non -BMG 50s that have been developed to get around that but this was a Barrett piece.

The caliber is legal, but the rifle has a pistol grip and detachable magazine...

It is a bolt gun. Legal.

Ah, my mistake. So they changed it from the original M98 design. I think it was SHOT 1999 that the showed the first Barrett M98, which at the time was a semi-auto .338LM.

Yeah -- he wants a gun to sell to us. For $6K... It better make my dinner, wash my, er, car, and shoot 1/4 MOA at 2000 meters

That's about the going rate for an AWSM anyway, but Barrett isn't known for making particularly accurate rifles....

Looks cool, cali legal, but how accurate is it?

If you clicked the article its subtitle is "1/2 MOA tackdriver at 800 meters" or something.

So I'm guessing sub 1" at 100 yards, which isn't uncalled for. Also it's 338 lapua so you WILL be reloading for it as a matter of course.

Not likely, .338 LM starts to run out of steam by then.:)

338 Lapua! 405 Cheytac!
I'm lucky to find a range with metal swinger at 600 yards.
And luckier yet to be able to SEE the target past 400 even with a decent scope. With ammo costs, I'll stick with 308 and 223!

Why is he wearing hearing protection?

The 300gr Scenar goes transonic well before that. Only the 270gr LRBT solid could stay super-sonic to 2000 yards.

.338LM's big expense is brass, but it's widely available from many sources in high volume, as are the bullets. With .408CT you have expensive brass AND expensive bullets and only limited sources and availability. But it stays supersonic to 2200 ;)

Lou is like 85% hearing impaired (from a childhood illness), and he does NOT want to lose the rest.

I thought that, AFTER I posted. I never knew he was "into" firearms. Good to know.

Lou is also a Los Angeles level 2 Deputy Sheriff.
Former high end Sniper rifle collector.

And he shoots VERY WELL.
