View Full Version : AK receiver sight options- where are they ??

As I am brand new to the wonderful world of the AK I was wondering- how come no one has figured out how to make a rail for the AK receiver which would allow the shooter all of the sight options [ scope, red dot, whatever] that AR shooters have ?
This might be a completely stupid question so my apologies in advance.

What about these type of mounts?

Side rail like tom posted above is the best option. Mounting an optic to the dust cover is a terrible way to maintain zero.

Who makes that side rail ? It looks like it weighs a ton, though still the best way I can imagine employing a rail on an AK.
Wonder if they're expensive ?

These guys make a great solution but it is big $$:

"AK REAR SIGHT RECEIVER RAIL SYSTEM
CATALOG NUMBER 51"

http://www.krebscustom.com/PartsPages/KalashnikovParts.shtml

This has potential:

A great option for forward mounting:

Jeez. Ouch.

This looks like the coolest idea to me, too bad they're at the very beginning of their R&D.:(

This one i'm not sure I understand how/ where it attaches..

The DPHArms idea I like the best but it doesn't appear they're anywhere near geared up for problem-free production and shipping. Very cool though.

The DPH Arms unit under development is an evolution of the Beryl design which they carry:

http://dpharms.com/images/Berylclone_4-1.jpg

http://dpharms.com/beryl-style-scope-mount-p-230.html

Disadvantage of the Beryl design is that you have to remove the trunnion screw to clean the rifle. and you lose functionality of your iron sights. The DPH unit under development and out of stock Krebs unit resolve this issue.

The Ultimak replaces the gas tube and is permanently attached. Heat transfer to your optic can be an issue with this design.

I'm running a side rail mount, and even with the low-profile mounts the height of the optics can be a very big issue. If I had to do it over again, I'd go with the Ultimak, though that Krebs piece looks good.

I. If I had to do it over again, I'd go with the Ultimak, though that Krebs piece looks good.

Why.. because it rides lower ?
And do you think the heat of the barrel under fire would affect, say an EOTech ?

EOTech are the most temp prone. No way i'd run one on an Ultimak.

Consider the LaRue.

I have seen reports over on ARFCom of guys burning out their EOTechs on the Ultimak

I went through this same analysis and found no perfect solution. I'll be watching development of the DPH unit. Hopefully, they will keep the price out of the stratosphere.

I went through this same analysis and found no perfect solution.

What about other red dot type sighting systems- maybe it's just the EOTech which has this particular heat sensitivity..

And how about something like the Doctor Optics ? Aimpoint ?
Something like this;

From my research, an Aimpoint/EOTech setup would tolerate the heat well.

Did you guys not just check the last 4 threads that asked about AK mount options in the past week? :p Or the post 6 before that one? :D

I think excluding AK as a search term is an issue on this site. As is AR...

THese side rails are the real thing (made in Belarus) and are good for scopes, but maybe a tad high for a holo red dot. These will clamp securely on the side rail of your Romie AK: http://www.cctactical.com/moreinfo.php?uniq_rand=8da49b4ff4c06eb86c6e314956c 4f023&txt_itemcode=CCT-AK-SRM-01&txt_from=2&txt_searchstring=163

12986

You can easily take these off and put it back on without losing zero on the scope.

just a quick question, how would you go about installing one of those side mounts on the ak? not the rail, the mount for the rail?

I don't see why it wouldn't be? Pin the folding stock open and put a Raddlock or Bullet Button on it you're good to go?

I had an ultimak setup with an old ruskie cobra sight.

Didnt like it because of how far forward it puts the sight. Swapped it out and sold the POS(imo - wasnt broken, but its "collectible" i guess) cobra for $$$$$$$

I just went with this set up. I did it on the cheap (ordered everything through cheaper than dirt for $75 with the $10 off coupon code) if I had to do it again I would go with the BlackJack mount because the one I have is too high. I don't know what your price point is but if you are going cheap consider what I did. If not that Krebs is BADA**!!!!!

BTW this was my thread...http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=118129&highlight=cod4
