My gunsmith just did converted this Saiga for a fellow Calguns member and we fabricated a bullet block to work on the larger mag release.

So... what do you think?

If I'm not mistaken, it looks like it is being held in place by a longer mag release pin. Looks good.

I was toying with a similar design when I was mucking around with a pistol grip conversion. The angle of the trigger guard that I used would make it a little hard to detach the magazine as it would partially block the hole. I just ended up cutting and running the trigger guard to the bottom of the current design. With the hole on the bottom, you don't run into that issue.

The only thing I would worry about is if the mag paddle can be manipulated without a tool. It is hard to tell based on just a photo, but it ALMOST looks like you can force the edge of finger and MAYBE catch the edge of the paddle with the corner of a fingernail to manipulate it. You would probably break your fingernail trying to release the mag though. I wouldn't be able to do it based on the pressure it takes to release my S12's magazine, but you never know.

In any case, great work guys and thanks for taking the time to help us here in CA.

OK... I will answer a few questions:

- You must use a tool to release the magazine as it's impossible without one.

- The magazine catch rivet is included with the rifle because if you were to ever leave California you could just swap it back out.

- We will start doing these conversions with the magazine lock installed and the welded up pin holes for $350

- The rear pin holes are TIG welded, cleaned up and then bead blasted to give it the original metal texture.

thanks,
Ron

Sounds like he is only offering a conversion not the complete gun. I however can supply the complete firearm;) as well as the conversion service here in Ca..

There's a new supply of Saiga 12's on the open market again. Buy one, and have it shipped to HDI for the conversion and transfer to your FFL. Or buy one directly from FEDUPWBS completely converted.

I have been getting quite a few IM's regarding this conversion. You can check the Commericial Sales section for more information. IM me if you still have any questions :)

How does it work? What do you have to do to release the mag - stick a screw driver into it?
