I am rolling out tomorrow for my first dove opener. Are Winchester Target Loads an ok shotshell to use for dove? 12 gauge, 2 3/4", 1200fps, 1 1/8 oz., 7.5 shot.
I also have some PMC Heavy Field Load 12 gauge, 2 3/4", 7.5 shot, 1 1/4 oz., 3 3/4 dram. These guys pack a good wallop through my over/under. The target loads are a lot easier shooting. I know...I'm gay. Anyway, thanks for your input.

I wouldn't go out with anything smaller than OO.

Just joking, target loads should be ample for Dove. 7 1/2 and 8 are what I use.

Cheers!

They know how to dive and do barrel rolls to get hunters to shoot each other.

YES, mourning doves are fine with anything 7-8 shot. I bought a 4 pack at Wally world for tomorrow as well. A few pointers are to:
stay low
let the doves fly into range
swing fast and get out front
Enjoy your hunt!

Also...you guys wear shorts in the field? Where I am going it is going to be in the 100's. Just wondering.

bring bug repellant if you wear shorts and short sleeve shirts.

I won't be going out this year....I've had bad experience in the past with openinig day on the same weekend of the Labor Day holiday. seems to bring out alot of inexperienced (not safe) hunters. Just be careful and make sure that you keep a safe distance from other hunters.

oh....btw... 7-1/2 or 8's do well for doves. Good Hunting.

Screw it..I'm bringing the AR and my SKS. My boys will need some covering fire.Be careful I've had shot fired in my direction on a hill in Yucaipa & the jerks fired a load that dropped on a SB Sheriffs unit so we all had to leave the area.

I wouldn't if there's rattlesnakes around.

I would not recommend shorts, most of the places I hunt are thick with mosquitoes this time of year. Trust me getting your legs all chewed up will ruin your day in a hurry. Although not optimal, the target loads you have will probably work OK.

If it's not windy use a Thermacell. If it is use 100% DEET. Good solvent for wad residue too.....

Keep in mind that dove have eyesight that makes an eagle look blind. No shiny things like sunglasses to reflect light. That includes your lily white face too. They will see contrasting colors and quick movement, and change direction in a heartbeat.
Dumber than a crowbar when it comes to decoys, especially around water in the afternoon. knock down a couple out of a flock and they'll circle around and try to land next to the decoys again.
Shoot some for me, this is the 2nd year in a row I'll miss opening day!

Opted for camo pants and a camo shirt. Not too many bugs but the brush and dirt made me appreciate the long pants. Target loads proved great. Bagged 6 birds and hit a bunch in the air. First time out. Had an amazing time and my 600 dollar Remington SPARTAN over/under worked perfectly. I outshot my veteran hunter friend with his 2K benelli. HAHAHAHAHA!. Can't wait for quail!
