Ok, so I've been looking around for a rail that I can mount an red dot on. My ak is a plinker, so I do NOT need anything expensive (like a mount that's not over say $60 bucks or so. Also, I do not want a mount that requires:

a. removal of the mount and optic from the rifle.. (in other words, those receiver cover mounts are a no go as are those attached to the gas tube)

b. Do not want to remove the rear sight..unless of course said mount provides a sight.

c. I do not have a side rail...so those are out of the question.

I've been looking at a few, but I'm just not convinced they will retain zero (like those that require removal when I have to clean something i.e. gas tube, receiver cover, etc.)

Any of you guys seen anything not require much modification to the firearm? BTW, just looking for the mount, but would consider a red dot if the price and requirements are right.:) Suggestions?

Based on your requirements I would say no such thing exist nor can one ever be designed that would meet all your requirements.

You took out ALL of the available mounting surfaces on an AK than throw in the fact that you don't want to spend more than $60. Sort of like saying you want only solid gold but will not spend any more than $10 per oz.

The only thing on the market right now, literally the ONLY CHOICE is the new Larue setup, but it's not going to be anywhere near your $60 price range. Short of buying a cheapo rail and bolting it to your top cover your not going to get anything with $60. In that price range you only have the UltimAK that replaces the gas tube (I never had to take mine off to clean the rifle and you should never have to) or the DPH Beryl mount, but that requires removal of the rear sight and would make disassemble difficult.

This is the only option for you and it's about 4.5x more than your budget. Note however that it does include the red dot which accounts for the bulk of the cost.

Well, if I could mount it back on the same place without it changing zero that would be nice. My problem with the top cover ones is that those wobble a bit and it throws off my zero a bit...which means no fun at the range.:(

Morepoops4u built a nice yugo and put one of these rails on it.. It does not use the trunnion rivits. Bolts right on.. I have thought about using a aimpoint and belarus mount... but KOBRA is the way to go.;)

I could slap a rail on the receiver in 10 min. Check out some pictures online to see where the rail needs to go. Get a few machine screws (fine threads and try as low profile head as possible) drill and tap the rail. Mark the receiver where the holes are and drill a bit oversized than the machine screws. Slap the rail on and run the screws tight (a little lock tight wouldn't hurt) and cut off whats in the way .

Here you go:

I purchased one of these and they are absolutely top quality. Go there and scroll down and check it out.

Another option for you would be one of these:
http://secure.armorholdings.com/b-square/ak.html

The B-Square mount does NOT touch the dust cover. It mounts to special pins that come with the kit. They replace the hammer and trigger pins. Then the mount goes to the pin ends. Very solid. And the dust cover can be removed from underneath the mount for cleaning. The mount is removable and holds a zero. NO modification to the rifle whatsoever. Just replace the original pins.

Both mounts put the rail over the receiver in front of your eyes where it belongs.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions (and for the link MIK very helpful!)
After careful consideration I think I will get a side rail and install it on my rifle. Doesn't seem very difficult and I need something to do in the next few weekends.:D Thanks again.

Ultimak is only $74 new. You could probably find a used one for $60.
