I recently purchased an M&P Shield in .40 S&W (CA Compliant) and I read that you can drop in a 9mm barrel into the .40 S&W and shoot 9mm through it because the barrel dimensions are all the same. However, I think the CA Compliant Shield barrels might be slightly different because of the loaded chamber indicator. I'm interested in buying the conversion barrel for this gun but I'm worried that the CA Compliant barrel might be different that a regular Shield barrel. Does anyone know of anything or even know what I'm talking about?

I don't think so - not because of the barrel at all - a .40 has a much larger rim dimension than a 9mm, so you might be able to feed, but you'll never extract.

The swap barrels you probably read about are the .40 to the .357 sig (which uses a .40 as the parent case).

I don't know about the Shield, but many people have bought 9mm barrels and magazines for their full size M&P40s and used them without issues.
If you're worried about the LCI on the Shield, just buy the replacement part from Midway or Brownells and change it out. I did my friends this past Saturday in about 2 minutes. 3/32 punch and brass hammer. Done.

I know that it can be done with the regular Shield, but my question is if the CA Compliant Shield that has the pop up loaded chamber indicator runs into the barrel tabs, will it work with a regular Shield barrel? I have attached photos of the regular Shield and the CA compliant Shield.

Hes talking about the no profile LCI. You remove the CA compliant shark fin and replace it with this part. Basically a blank to fill the void where the fin was before. It's literally a 1 min process.

I see what your saying now OP. Not sure how a complaint barrel would fit in a CA version. I would think the LCI would interfere. I would try to find a CA compliant barrel just to be safe.

The no-profile with 9mm should probably work.

Yea but even the no profile would stick out like the regular shark fin possibly interfering with the way the non CA compliant barrel cut is. Looking at the pictures I dont think it would jive.

Just sell the gun(for a loss probably) and buy a 9mm shield, like you should have in the first place.

Can't buy the 9mm or I would have. S&W is on back order.

Does removing the CA compliant LCI for the no profile one make it illegal?

No it does not. The part is only required to make it roster compliant. Once you own it, you can do whatever you want to the firearm short of making it into an "assault weapon." I.E. - no non permanent threaded barrel, full auto, etc.

Your bet bet is to use a CA Shield barrel to convert your 40 to 9 but, I have never seen a CA barrel for sale. Right after the Shield was released I saw a few barrels for sale but that dried up quickly and I haven't seem them for sale since. So good luck finding a Shield barrel.

UPDATE: I picked up my Shield last week and I bought the Axis No Profile Indicator to replace the pop up LCI. Now with the no profile I would be able to drop in a 9mm barrel no problem. I have already tried this with my buddy's 9mm barrel.

Regarding SW Sheild magazines, does anybody know of any extra round magazines?
For the 9mm, they have 7rd and 8rd mags. Are there any 9rd mags out there?
Likewise with the 40, they have 6 and 7rd mags. Do they make any 8rds?
I know the Ruger LC9 comes with a 7rd, but there are 9rds available and 8rd base plates.
Thanks for the info.

be careful though, as if you got it for CCW, individual IA rules vary for weapons.

No issues with SSD in Sacramento. I asked and was told no problem with legal mods.

I own both the 9 mm and the .40 S&W versions of the Shield.

No, the barrel of the 9 mm will not fit in the .40.
The block surrounding the barrel at the breech is smaller on the 9 mm, and just rattles around in the .40 slide.

You might be able to use a whole upper swap. But where would you get it? Smith won't sell it.

You can find the CA Shield on Gunbroker. Find and FFL to catch and DROS it.
