at least with that last name you can safely assume he won't be taking care of La Raza at the detriment of everyone else.

OK folks, let's not add too much of our drama to this.

T's big-name support includes some people leading some orgs that we might have been at odds with and some of those folks read CGN. But those are important endorsements that we don't wanna queer if we want a good man in office.

Is this an appointed position, or one we vote in?

I'm trying to figure out why he would want the job to defend the City's elected officials. These are the people who make the laws he currently "fights" against....aren't they? For instance, if the mayor got sued for his immigration policies, isn't it the City Attorney who will defend him? If the Sheriff gets sued for his CCW policies, won't the City Attorney have to defend him? This isn't the District Attorney, I believe this is the office that represents the City of Los Angeles and city officials in lawsuits against them.

he can "defend" them but he has to follow the LAW... IE hmmmmm maybe an ILLEGAL immigrant is really illegal..

The Sheriff is COUNTY not city. He has an internal attorney, as well as County Counsel waiting in the wings....

Such awesome news, it deserves to be in 2A Politics. :D

Yes, really. He is good guy and probably qualified for the job.... but what can we gun comunity to get out of it?

Kruzr

The Sheriff is COUNTY not city.

You're right! So if someone sues the city for the requirement to leave your private information when buying ammo, he still has to defend the city.

He won't be defending any illegal immigrants but could be defending the city policy to "look the other way."

I'm just saying it is a 180 in the people who will be his clients. (Fox News would call it a flip-flop :D ) As an attorney, he has to defend his clients whether he agrees with them or not. That would include the city policies.

It would be very hard for me to do that job and feel good about it. If that's what he wants, more power to him and good luck. I just can't find a reason to think that it will make any difference to gun owners in the city. In fact, it looks like a loss to the gun community if he leaves private practice.

wouldn't the city attorney be responsible to inform the city when a law or proposed law is unconstitutional and would open the city up to suit.

That depends on lots of things. Some city attorneys seem to view their job as defending the city - no matter what the law or circumstance.

He can best defend the city by advising it to change its ways, to tell them to stop being stupid. That way he does his job and we get what we want. An attorney's job is to keep their clients out of doo doo, not tell them to keep doing the same bad stuff and stay clean despite it.

Guys,

City attorney in LA is like a DA light. Here is the current City Attorney who looks like he's not running again:

I doubt he stands a chance. They will mount a campaign against him portraying him as an "extremist" similar to the one the Oakland detective did with the "evil 50BMG round that can pass through a police car and still kill an officer" and the Latino dominated city of LA will just vote against him.

Who else is running?

As an aside, I don't see this as being too significant with respect to the Second Amendment.

Chuck Michel was, at one time, a prosecutor himself and now he stands tall defending poor slobs like us who run afoul of a system gone occasionally haywire. My point being, litigators can and do change which side of the line of scrimmage they play from time to time. It's supposed to be about the process and, ultimately, justice.

The LA city attorney could have a profound influence on what the LAPD does by setting prosecutorial policy on crimes that come before his office as well as on the civil litigation side. Even though I'm far from LA, I'd be happy to write a check to support this candidacy.

IIRC, City Attorneys also have some say in how proposed ordinances are worded, and if an ordinance would be legal to put into effect.

So like Mike Aguirre down here in SD City? Someone who won't play nice with the establishment all the time?

Aguirre is truly in a category of his own. It is believed that his actions are driven by his future aspirations.

Mike Aguirre is a very dangerous man. Mostly because he is a very poor attorney. He has squandered tens of millions of tax payer dollars in his idiotic lawsuits. The man is such a moron that he just sued Countrywide Mortgage in an attempt to make San Diego a "mortgage sanctuary" so mortgages in default could not be foreclosed.
I see NOTHING funny about Mike Aguirre.
