Well I went to a little creek today that I will call “Beaver Dam” creek (Sorry I did not get a lot of fish pics on this one. I kept screwing up the shots). We got there nice and early in the morning, after quite the drive on a little dirt road. The first place we fished was on the creek just above a pretty large beaver dam. It was pretty productive with quite a few little Redbands taken on various dry flies. So we decided to head to the river that this creek flows into. Once we were there I caught another Redband on a dry and I noticed some very large red fish swimming. Yes there was a Kokanee run going on. I grabbed my 5wt (the largest rod I had with me) and ties on a nice 1/O bright purple fly. After a little while I managed to hook one. He fought like no other then my frickin line went limp yes I LDRed the damn thing. Crap…..by this time Chris noticed so he came up to where I was fishing and we attempted to catch some but to no avail. After about two hours of that we decided to move up river. We each caught a lot more Redbands, and I ended up also catching about a 16” squawfish (which was fun on the 1wt). As the sun began to get low on the horizon we decided to call it a day. Pretty interesting day I will saw, started off on a small creek and ended up almost landing a Kokanee, it definitely was a fun day.

How far out of Boise are you driving to get to all these fishing spots?
Are you using a 1/2 wt for those little guys?
What patterns are they taking & size hooks?

1. It depends on where you are talking about, but anywhere from a 45min drive to a 4 hour drive.

2. 90% of my fishing is on small creeks with my 1WT Orvis Super Fine rod. I just enjoy small creeks where there is nobody else with great looking wild fish.

3. Yesterday the Redbands were taken with Adams sz 18-16, Royal Wulfs sz 16, PMD sz 18. The Kokanee was taken off a 1/O Purple Egg Sucking Leech. The Squaw fish does not count ;)
