I bought the 165gr HST first but then I read the FBI reports on how the 180gr passed the automotive glass barrier test, while the 165gr didn't. However, I like the energy figures on the 165 more. What do you guys think? (and please don't say that you can't go wrong with any round in a .40, I just want to hear detailed experiences of one or another, pros and cons). Which would you carry?

Well, so you're not neglected I'll throw in my two cents. I have fired a lot of 180 grain and 165 grain through my 4" XD-40. Hands down I prefer the 165 grain. For me the 180 grain has too much "snap" when it comes to recoil compared to the 165 grain. I can shoot the 165 grain faster and more accurately than the 180's also. For me it's 165 grain all the way.

I'm old fashioned I always so go bigger go hotter
Im also a big guy and can handle the heavier hotter loads without noticing a difference in my accuracy
