I made this point in another thread. But the topic is so important that it needs to have its own thread.

Most of you who hang out in this forum are pretty active, so I am directing this post to those of you who might not be as active yet. Please get involved.

Here is what you can do TONIGHT!

1) If you haven't done so - join the NRA: http://membership.nrahq.org/

2) Join your local Member's Council: http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/volunteer/index.shtml

3) Call, write and email your representatives, based on the directions here: http://nramemberscouncils.com/legs.shtml

4) Donate to CGF: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=108030

It would be great if other Calgunners could use this thread to post additional suggestions on how to get in the fight. There's lots of work that needs to be done, and there's lots of things to do. Let's make it easy for new members by giving them CONCRETE steps they can take. . .

Oh, here are some things that you probably should NOT do:

1) Don't join every seemingly pro 2A group out there. Many of them are just mom and pop shops that don't really do a whole lot, other than publish newsletters and take your money.

2) Don't do open carry yet. There are numerous posts about the reasons for this, so I won't go into it.

3) Don't go out and get yourself arrested. We do not need martyrs.

:D

EDIT: if this thread does well, I'll start writing other Newbies' Guides® on other topics. . .

One should remember that NRA's ILA group can use some $$ too - though since it's political it won't be deductible.

Things to do here at Calguns:

Follow along - posts such as Paul Payne's and Anthonysmanifesto's provide current accurate information on bills being considered. If you know what's going on, you can pick things to do that may help.

Don't act surprised by a law you've never heard of - it's certainly possible that one has come late to the party, but bringing up things well known six months ago tends to diffuse interest. Search (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/search.php) first (but see next item!)

And in that vein, Give threads informative titles - things like "Have you heard about this?" or "Terrible new bill!" don't tell anything about the content. Things like "Desaulnier's AB 2235 personalized handgun bill", while longer, tell everyone what's inside, and tends (only tends, mind you) to prevent duplicates. Getting everybody in one thread mostly keeps things from odd diversions, and makes searching easier.

Read the "sticky" posts - mods and others do a pretty decent job of identifying important topics and leaving them at the tops of the first pages of forums.

know what the law is & what it is not. Do not spread FUD. If you do not know, ask. This applies to configuring your rifles legally & your trunk guns.

The only real contribution I'm doing is helping gun culture by taking new shooters (and old ones) to the range, get them excited about their guns, make their spouses hate me by tempting them to buy new guns, etc. I also educate those in need of it and talk up guns as much as possible showing them that it's nothing to be afraid of. Act locally, think globally...or something like that. OH, and I've talked to Ellen Tauscher twice.

^ is the biggest part
I know plenty of people who are registered to vote but when it comes time to vote there to lazy or too busy to vote

Gee, why didn't I think of something like this. :p

GMTA!

Maybe you could title it "For 16 things YOU CAN DO to help pass "Shall Issue" Right-to-Carry, repeal the CA AWB; and pass a CA con. RKBA amendment" and add an active link to the webpage and then everyone can add it to their signature lines? ;) :D

Now that we've got Heller and soon to get incorporation, I'll drop the part re a CA con. RKBA amendment and add in supporting CalGuns Foundation.

+1 to all the above and...

Educate folks with no firearm experience (or anti's if willing), take them shooting and show them how firearms can be used safely and in a responsible manner, show them how to have fun with guns. Change minds!

all of the above and I must add..

Gun Owners of America (GOA)
Hard knocks organization. No Compromise - And they mean it.

I contribute to GOA as much as I do to NRA - No less. I feel my dollar goes further with GOA than with NRA.

I'll be as gentle as I can, but GOA/GOC made the governor sign the Microstamping legislation. No Compromises, except with everyone's actual - you know - gun rights...

Can you point me to some more info on this?

Not doubting, but for my own benefit would like to know more about this.

Thanks Gene,

I just got done reading through those threads. I was familiar with the CRPA issues, but was under the impression that GOA/GOC were on our side. Looks like I need to pay better attention to who I'm giving my money to.

The general rule is that any money given to the NRA (and NRA-ILA) will be put to good use. Same obviously goes for the CGF, since CGF works very closely with the NRA.
