When I have my handgun in my car, I usually have it either in the trunk in an unlocked case, or on the back seat in the case, locked.

Currently I use a combination padlock. If sh*t ever hit the fan, and I had to use it, It'll take too long to open a combo lock.

If I were to use a key padlock and semi-permanently attach (glue) or permanently attach (weld) the key inside the keyhole, would that still be considered a locked case?

It seems like it would be a little iffy in terms of still being considered a "lock".. but I don't know.

it would not be a locked case if the key was welded into the lock

you could however get this style
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004SQLH
and have all but one dial in the unlock and the last one be one number off

Why don't you just leave the key in the lock without doing anything perminate or leave the key right next to it? So if you actually ever use it you can say the gun/ammo was legally in a locked container.

Ah yes, we use those locks on our dumpsters at work. I didn't even think about those. Good idea.

This sounds like a better idea...

My key hangs on a keychain from the gun rug. A Brian Griffin keychain to be exact.

I've oft-wondered if there would be any problem with having the key close to or attached to the case, or in the lock itself in regards to LEO interaction.

I used to have a lock box with an integrated combo lock mounted in my truck and 1 loaded mag in the door.
