View Full Version : Good off the shelf clear wood finish for

my favorite Daughter's Stevens m24 double gun.

Shard's are repaired with Acraglas, tiny filler repair's done & sanded, picking a matching wood stain tomorrow, & needing a good clear finish hopefully that will more than not match the hatch, & be a tough as rest on the rifle.

What do you/have used in the pass that I can pick up at any, or some hardware stores.

Only need the smallest of can.

P.S. the rest of rifle looks real nice, and this will be a spot repair, feathered in on both sides of breach block.

Hope to figure how to post pics latter & show the process/steps I did for CG members.

I've only used various brands of polyurethane and its worked well, don't know what's on your rifle already though, might be best to stain and use tung oil

Last stock I refinished I used Cabot semi-gloss spar varnish, it seems to hold up better to sun exposure than Minwax does.

I've used spar varnish and minwax poly. Both came out really nice. I'd give the nod to the minwax though

I like to use Howard's Restore-a Finish for an original finish. Can be found at Home Depot or hardware stores:
