View Full Version : Not all cambers/ammo created equal it would seem

Recently was at the range with my favorite Daughter, and had her bring the rifle I gave my Grandson, a 1970 Rem 580 22lr bolt action.

I have with me a brick/box:facepalm: of 333 win plated 22lr's HP, we've been shooting these through my 1022, & MKIII, and they were running fine.

Brought out the Remy put one in and round was a pretty tight, so discarded it & grab another, not as snug but still a little snug, once in I test fired it, as it's been sitting for a long long while, and bang, fired great just like it use to.

The problem arises when extracting, it would not, it was stuck good, OK I say probably just dirty & put back in car.

When home I remove the spent case (was tight) but looks ok, so clean the snot out of that thing, buy taking it all apart as it's not seen the light of day for a really long time.

After I'm done it looks like new, so I think I should check this out with ammo an grab the same stuff as used at range.

It's still real tight the last 3/16th going in, and do not continue, I go an get a different ammo Fed auto match, it falls right in the chamber with out closing the bolt, but I do it anyway, it's perfect.

So in the end Win ammo was fine for Rugers (both new), but unusable in older rem 580, now must tell you this old 580 shoots circles around all the rest of my 22's by a good margin (can soot well at 100yds) , and is most consistent with many ammo manufactures.

So would seem that some differences in tolerances are at play in guns & ammo.

Have you ever shot 22 shorts in the Rem 580?

Yep, shorts, longs, LR, love how it shoots CB shorts, less noise than a pellet gun.

Possibly some lead build up? Could still look shiny even when scrubbed.

+1. Try some white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide mixed 50/50. Or Chore Boy.

Like I posted above, the Federal auto match just drops in & falls out, it seems the Winchester ammo had issue with the 580 chamber, maybe just tighter tolerances ?

...It's still real tight the last 3/16th going in...

Sounds like a match chamber.

I often wonder, as it shoots so well.
