Picking it up on Sunday, so no pics yet. Will post after I clean 'er up right purdy.

I know...everyone should be born with one of these things. So I'm a late bloomer.

Got it from a buddy of mine for $80. Aside from a broken extractor, it's in fine condition (or so he says, but I trust him). He said it's a mid to late 80's vintage, with the integral Weaver mount. Round count unknown. The extractor broke while he was using one of those GAT trigger activators. Last time it was fired was...well...late 80's.

Traded another friend a pound of walnut media for a tool steel extractor and spring. Think I got the better end of the bargain.

So. What should be my first upgrade? Thinking of an OverMolded stock, then a CF barrel. Whaddya think?

I know, Guntech...but next time, at least put up the funny graphic. You know the one, where all the dorks are in front of the McD's. "Pichers" always makes me chuckle.

Won't have it in-hand 'til Sunday. Pics'll be up shortly thereafter. :)

bolt buffer...

bolt buffers arent that important, they are nice, but not needed. get a volquartzen exact edge extractor. they are very very reliable. extended mag release is nice.

i say shoot it a bunch before going in on new stocks and barrels.

Sweet.

I just grabbed a 10/22 myself.

Here it is in my group of July purchases:

And here's a pic of it about 1 hour after I got it home and went at it with some parts:

Now I want about 5 more of them to build differently and experiment on more internal parts. :chris:

Got that one on mine, finished in silver.

Still need to do the barrel upgrade, and get silver optics!

This scope is going back onto an old bolt-rifle of mine...

Have you guys seen the German WWII MG42 make-up kit for 10/22s?
I was thinking along these lines:

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=180441

HA! Gotcha! :43:

I'm thinking sloguy's advice is pretty sound...shoot the frikken thing, then figure out what's needed. I DO want that Volquartsen trigger, though. That's looking to be a necessity.

Thanks for your input, guys.

I've only got two words: KRINKER PLINKER!

kdm

If I could legally change my SLR-95 into a Krink I'd do it. Those are cool! One of my "ones that got away" stories is the 7" Carbon-15 pistol (kinda Krink-like) that I didn't have the $ for at the time.

Can it be done with a 10/22? I'm gonna search...

forgive my noobness but what exactly does an auto bolt release do? is it similar to the bolt hold open of an AR?

Not exactly. Instead of pulling back on the charge handle and pushing on the bolt release to release the bolt, you just pull back on the charge handle to release the bolt. Does that make sense?

indeed it does! thank you sir :)

Here's a video showing how to install the mod. It also shows how it works after it's installed.

are aftermarket mods for this rifle legal here in cali (such as the mg42 conversion posted earlier)? The different mods i see for this rifle are "not able to be shipped to California". Why arent they legal?

ojisan
07-25-2008, 8:31 AM
Just no new hi-cap mags in new guns. Many places don't want to ship to CA even if legal here. Other threads / discussions on this topic are here. Yes, frustrating, keep looking you will find someone somewhere to ship.

kdm

IMC87...my understanding is, since this is a rimfire, you can have a pistol-gripped stock. CA law is specific in stating "...no centerfire semiautos with pistol grips...".

Don't go thinkin' I was serious about that MG42 kit, now. :eek I could maybe see a Tapco style stock, but geez...

That's just their company policy. It's exactly like the policy that some sellers have on Gunbroker to not sell a single item to CA because it just takes too much time and effort on the seller's behalf to make sure no forbidden parts get shipped into CA.

That's a nice scope, hybridatsun...what brand?

BTW, how's the #4?

hybridatsun350
07-25-2008, 11:42 AM
The scope is a Mueller APV 4.5-14x50. Everyone raves about it over at RimfireCentral. Some say it's good for the money ($115), but it's a great scope whether you consider the price or not.

The No.4 is doing well, but I haven't had a chance to pick up any .303 yet. It looks nice just sitting there though! haha

The most important upgrade is the trigger.

You can drop in some parts on the cheap- DIY- which significantly improves the trigger. Get on rimfirecentral.com and pm "swampfox" for his trigger kit. $45 dollars which includes a volquartzen hammer, extended mag release, auto bolt release and bolt buffer. Unbeatable deal right there. The hammer makes a huge difference on the trigger pull. Swampfox also does trigger jobs on the factory trigger group very cheap- Deal with confidence- he's been there awhile and people rave about doing business with him- I have, and I'm very pleased.

Thanks, postal...that's a good lead. I'll remember swampfox.

Congrats on the purchase. $80 is a great deal.

I have a few 10/22s and they great fun for both experienced and new shooters.

As to the mods...

I'd say shoot it stock the first few times. Get a feel for it.

You can then use that experience to ask yourself what you'd change to make it better. And, when you browse mods online or read suggestions people here make you can reference in your mind how that might affect your personal shooting taste. This way you're less likely to end up with mods and expenses you don't need or end up changing later.

Enjoy, they're great rifles!
