I'm getting close to buying a new, box stock Stag Arms AR-15 Model 1. I'll be scoping this puppy with a low power scope if I get it. Something like 1.25-4x or in that neighborhood.

I have no desire to have iron sights. I would remove the front post sight and the carry handle (I'd keep them if I ever sell the rifle down the road). Does anyone know what this rifle weighs, dry, in stock configuration, and about how much weight I'd lose by removing the front post and carry handle? I want her to be light and handy. Stag Arms' web site does not give the weights of the various models.

Also, does anyone know if the front sight is removable? It looks like it's held by tapered pins.

The front sight base weighs 5.5 ounces.
How much you save depends on what you replace it with.
There are aluminum gas blocks as light as an ounce.

I don't know what the carry handle weighs off the top of my head, but it's lighter than a scope mount with a scope in it.

The front sight also contains the gas block, if you don't already know that.

If you remove the front sight, you're going to have to replace it with a gas block. As Randall said, some of them are very light.

But you will not be able to removed the front sight and replace it with nothing.

The upper half you mentioned about is with standard FSB. Removing the front sight post will not shed a lot of weight. You have two choices:

1) Chop the upper portion of the standard FSB. It makes more senses.

2) As Randall said, replace the FSB with a light gas block.

By the way, the hand guard / forearm is also the source of weight. Get a real light weight forearm like DD.

One more option would be fluting the barrel. It would shed a few onces.

As would starting with a light weight barrel in the first place.

For light/handy/KISS ( and a welcome change from the Swiss Army/tacti"cool" ) guns;), check http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=304444

hth & post a pic or 2 when you're done.

He started it with Stag H1. No choices for the BBL.

Its really not that hard, just choose thing lightest components for your rifle. Of course you give up some functionality but thats the cost. Like putting on a CAR stock, no railed fore end, light weight barrel and light optics like a docter optic

DD forends weigh less than the stock handguards.

I think you'll be surprised how light your rifle is when you get it.

You might be able to shave a weee bit of weight by using a semi-auto carrier also. The full carriers have a little more metal.

You could also save weight by using invisible ammo and mags.

+1

ARs are already very light and well-balanced, so there's really no reason to sweat the little details. I personally wouldn't use an aluminum gas block; there are steel ones out there that are very low-profile and weigh very little. And if you're going to get a rail, do it because you actually want to mount accessories and/or free float the barrel. Don't get one for weight reduction alone as that really isn't worth it.

Haven't run the weight numbers on the new rifle, but save a lightweight JP barrel, it's awesome. The only "lightweight" part is the Briley CF tube. After that it's pretty standard affair with the full JP-LMOS.
