This will be my first AR build, so my budget is 800.

I know I want my lower to be a stag arms, but as for the rest I leave it up to you guys to suggest which parts to get to finish the rifle and where to get the parts. I am going to go with a bulet button. Thank you.

Just go with a KISS build using either an A2 Upper reciever or a Flat-top with a detachable carry handle. Best way to keep price down is use iron sights. The flat-top will give you the option to get optics in the future. Depends, do you want a Carbine or Rifle size weapon? You can buy good quality complete upper for around $500. Keep your Complete Lower to about $300 which is average price for a basic complete lower when you build it up.

boom... if you're gonna go stag lower, might as well get the Stag less-lower receiver kit from AR15sales.com pete is an honest guy with great prices. it comes with everything you'll need minus the lower receiver and the BB.

$800.00? You didn't say what kind - heavy target type barrel, 20" HBAR? I'll improvise.

Stag lower - about $185 with DROS
DPMS LPK from Brownells - $50.00.
Ace shorty stock from Brownells - $85.00
A 14.5" (16" with perm weld FH) CAR from M & A or Del Ton (you did say under $800.00, right?) for about $400.00 (Del Ton) $455.00 (M & A)

The Del Ton light weight brings you in about $675.00, the M & A about $730.00. Figure another $75.00 for whatever I forgot and you're in at $800.00.

That's just my "off the top" go at it.

Thank you for your responses. Weight is not an issue nor is barrel length. This will be strictly a plinking/becnh rest shooting gun. A heavy barrel would be nice.

Have to say, he's one of the best guys to deal with. I spoke with him a few times, his 1st shop was about 2 miles away from my home in southern NH. I've ordered at least 3 RRA 2 stage triggers from him, didn't even get charged for shipping.

my basic stag 2HL build was about 870$
I ended up adding some goodies so the current cost and value is more now.
check out my pics in my signature.
I got my upper from pete, it did take about 3 weeks or so though.

mid-length gas, if you can, for a 14.5-16" barrel. It makes the running smoother and is less hard on parts.

Barring that, go with a rifle (20").

Why not buy from someone else on the boards.

Check out Upstate Armory Group. I think you'll find a nice prebuilt Stag AR in the price range you seek before DROS + transfer fees.

You can get a chromed lined flat top kit with a detachable carry for about $610 shipped from Del-Ton. All you will need is the lower, a bullet button and a mag. I built a midlength from them and it runs great. If you do a search on ar15.com you will see that Del-Ton gets good reviews. Mark

It's a great article on assembling high quality parts for just under $800.

CMMG Upper $500 Riflegear.com
Mega Tactical Lower $99 Coldwar Shooters
LPK $60 Riflegear.com
A2 Buttstock $60 6 position for $70 Riflegear.com
Bullet Button $25 Riflegear.com
10rd mag $16 Riflegear.com

Used Rear BUIS or removeable carry handle $40-???

With DROS and tax you'll be a touch over, but I'd rather wait to be able to afford the rear sight than skimp on the upper. Even the $500 CMMG upper isn't considered top shelf or anything.

As stated by others, there are always used uppers for sale here and on AR15 dot com.

Here's a perfect example for, "Buy it on the forum."

This $1k build you could EASILY part out $200 in accessories from and still end up with a rifle with hundreds more in upgrades than what you'd get building it.

Something like this would get you into your price range
