Ok so I just finished building my AR .22 Since its rimfire I didnt put a bullet button or prince 50 and it seems like the general consensus around here is that rimfire is not centerfire (obviously) and therefore is exempt from the evil features laws.

Now I just read the AR/AK memo on the site here and it says that an open magwell pistol gripped AR receiver could be regarded as an assault weapon and therefore should not be used with a rimfire upper.

How would an open magwell pistol gripped receiver with rimfire or even with NO upper be regarded as a centerfire rifle?

Thats completely contradicting what everyone on here says. So my question is who here has an AR .22 that they use with detachable mags? Should I be worried about this? I REALLY dont want to topload rimfire...bleh

AR/AK memo is OLD. Bill himself will say that's old, overly conservative information for the beginning of the OLL movement.

There are a good number of items in that memo that have since changed.

No problem, old information regarding open mag well on rimfire. On my Spikes ST22 I drop the mag all the time.

When I complete my AR .22, I'll likewise be dropping mags without a bullet button.

Yeah I figured that was just being conservative. A featureless or fixed mag rimfire just sounds like way overkill since the law is very specific CENTERFIRE. Time to hit the range. I did print out the AR FAQ and will throw it in my bag just for S&G's ;) I guess I will mention that since the rimfire upper is self contained I did take out the buffer and spring from the stock so you couldnt cycle a centerfire round through the lower even if someone were to add a centerfire upper to it anyways.

Also, didn't Bill write that before the Bullet Button was created?. So at that time, that was no known way of dropping a magazine with evil features so the general rule was that if your magazine well was open you had an AW. It is just outdated.
