View Full Version : California Legal 9mm Carbines

I have always liked the idea of having a carbine that was the same caliber as my pistol and would be fun to shoot at pistol cal only ranges. I know ruger made a cal legal 9mm carbine but has since discontinued it. Are there any other options other than looking for a used ruger?

Thanks In Advance

I have a Marlin Camp gun. Works fine and takes S & W Model 59 magazines so if you happen to have owned one with hi caps pre ban you can shoot 15 or 17 round mags.

You could also use this:http://www.mechtechsys.com/1911.html

Of course you need a 1911 and have to fix the magazine. Covering the mag release on a 1911 is very easy, I did a combo of covering it and fitting it flush, use a Para 1911 as the gun part. The manufacturer will sell direct to you since it's not a firearm.

Just look for a PC9. They're not that hard to come by. Anywhere you look, they going to be about $500.

Look for it under rifles--ruger. I don't know if it's still in stock.

I just got a Marlin Camp 9 for about 300 bucks. Not the most beautiful gun I own, but it gets the job done.

I really like my RRA 9-mm BB OLL build. It took alot of tinkering to get it to work reliably (some mags work, some don't) but now its alot of fun.

Aren't they all technically legal, as long as we follow the AW flow chart?
Say, if somebody makes a bullet button for the Keltec sub2000, they'd be legal here.

Ideally, I wouldn't want to deal with any mods to make it legal. The goal would be a simple reliable carbine that could work for home defense and be a fun plinker. I considered going the 9mm AR route and would do it in a heartbeat in a free state. What I would really love is a PX Storm for its ambi capabilities, but the mods would be such a pain.

Thanks 69Mach1 for the link to the police distributer of the PC9. This will likely be my choice. Its similarity to the 10/22 is a plus for weapon's familiarity, but it certainly isn't as sexy as some option available in other states. Anyone have one or put some rounds down the barrel of one?

Can't those fire in the folded position though?

i'm not sure about that but the OAL is 29.5" so you'd have to perm attach a FH or extend the buttstock a little to get 30"

I have a Ruger 9mm carbine. I bought it new five or six years ago for a bit over $300 at the late lamented B&Bs in Westminster (maybe it was longer that that??). It has a 1x3 Weaver scope on it and its a really fun gun to shoot. I've never shot it for groups, but I've run well over 2K rounds through it (mostly Wolf steel 9mm) with no problems at all. I don't recall it ever jamming. It does have a heavy trigger, but once you get used to it its easy to hit things. With the scope at 1X its quick to get it on target with both eyes open. I already had a supply of hi cap mags for it as I also own a Ruger P94. But even with ten rounders its still a fun gun. Accurate enough for me, and cheap to feed. At least until I have to replenish my stash of Wolf 9mm. :)

As far as I know, the Ruger PC9 is not made anymore, so you'd have to find a used one.

Excellent price.
Most excellent price, sweet gun, mags are easy to find.

Mine has a folding stock and a Tasco red dot. Super reliable and a nice shooter.

The Kel-Tec SUB2000 can not fire when in the folded position.

....I just wish the Hi Point 995 were PRK legal. 9mm, American made, lifetime guarantee and under $300.00 all make it look really attractive. The only drawback is that they are ungodly, butt ugly in the factory stock. Nothing an inexpensive aftermarket stock wouldn't fix....

They are legal with the BB. I tried to get one and couldn't quite get it. I tried calling several places and nobody had one in stock. Was going to order one from SOG or J&G and have it shipped to Lanworld for modification but decided it wasn't worth paying all that extra effort, shipping and labors cost to get it done. I lucked out finding the Camp 9 on another board.

Looking at it again, I can see now why it wouldn't fire. I don't know why I was thinking that. Too bad we can't have those here, they seem like nifty little guns.

You can get creative with 9mm AR's, they can be made to be both CA legal and handy to have in close quarters.

I have a pc4 and am not really all that impressed with it, I only bought it because it was cheap

Got my 995 directly from LanWorld with BB installed for $230 with rail and scope. This was back in Nov 2007, so I'm not sure if they still carry them in stock, but it's always worth asking them.

Great little carbine. Accurate and reliable. Spend the extra $50 and get the stock from ATI and it'll look pretty cool.

I talked with Chris at LanWorld a few times a while ago and he wasn't able to find any. He was great about it, but I decided to pursue other avenues. I might try again someday but since I got the camp 9, it has moved way down the priority list.

Nope they're gone. I was at Richmond Rod and Gun last weekend and this retired LEO let me and a friend shoot his PC9 with rails and an eotech, holy hell now that was a blast and decent accuracy for 100 yards. Right now I'm leaning towards the PC9 but since Ruger stopped manufacturing em I guess my best bet is either calling up local gun shops or checking the Private Firearms Sales forum constantly. I'm starting to do some research on a 9mm AR now since I can't easily find a PC9.

Didn't look today and don't know the caliber, but City Arms had a Ruger a few weeks ago.

Has anyone chrono'd a 9mm from a carbine? What's the effective range?
