I'm a college student, barely able to pay for gas, and I'm wondering. Is it possible for me to get a decent AK for 300-400 bucks? That's before DROS/Transfer/Shipping that is. I'm looking for something in 5.45x39, or something that is cheap so I can continue to eat and shoot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

dros a reciever and build it up yourself. that way you can save up for the kit and space the cost out over time.

but at that point why not build a oll ar? spend less than 200 on the lower and buy parts over time. its less of a bite to the wallet that way.

or, sell car, buy a motorcycle and buy the rifle outright with the difference. save on gas money as well. gas prices suck lately, i havent driven my 4x4 in months.

I know, but I think I will be making this an AK-74 clone. That being said I will probably go with a plum set of furniture and a 74 type muzzle brake.

I'm not finding any retailers with a wasr 22? Anyone know one?

wasr 22 if you are poor
saiga 7.62 is really a must have in the ak world, it is a brand new russian built top quality ak (with the exception of the crappy stock).

if you just want an ak to have an ak, and you dont care about accuracy, quality of parts, etc... then romanian AKs can be had for as low as $230. expect

i would STRONGLY suggest a used saiga for abut $180 over everything else though unless you already have 2 saigas.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm definitely seeing more options available to me. Found this while looking around http://www.classicarms.us/ there seem to be some well priced AKs on there, as well as good deals on surplus ammo. Anyone have experience purchasing from this guy?

Get a Saiga.
In all likeliness, I think I may end up doing this. I found a guide to converting them to be more like "true" AK, and less like a sporty hunting rifle.
http://www.cross-conn.com/Saiga_Conversion/
Seems like it's not too hard to do, and the Saigas are cheap. I've heard they are good quality too...

Enjoy the look & feel for one hour of shooting $ 50,00 (7.62x39) or the whole afternoon $40.00 OR LESS (.22 LR)

I am also a broke college student. I saved enough money, blew it partying, saved up again, spent it on food and necessities. A Saiga is cool if you want to have a conversion project to work on. However, a conversion with the tools can be from $200-400. LAN World has a good selection of Cali AKs, and knows plenty of FFLs.

a Rimfire AK is as good as it gets (for low cost shooting) any other cal will eat up your funds (Unless your a benchrest kinda guy LOL )

Saiga .223 or 7.62x39
Wasr 10
Wasr 22

To the OP, you can try finding a Wasr 10 for your budget but most likely it will be used. Both the Wasr 22 and the Saiga will be brand new. The reason why the Saiga is on top of the list is b/c i too am a college kid and the Saiga fits the bill imo. If you choose to convert later down the road, you ca piece it together.
