View Full Version : Cheapest place for a Mossberg 590A1?

I'll be buying my first shotgun soon, so I'm wondering who sells the Mossberg 590A1 the cheapest. Not the 590, but the 590A1 with 9 rnd capacity :)

I think they are sold at Big5 and go on sale for ~$310. Can anyone clarify that?

I'm located in Santa Rosa in Nor-Cal, and I don't want to have to drive too far to go get it. Maybe within a 40 mile radius.

call your local gun store before going to big five and buy from them if they can match the price

I heard a nasty little rumor (I may have started it without having any reason to believe it tru) that the mossbergs at big five have major rust problems :P

nothin wrong with the big 5 moss590s. buy it. Its the best deal around for a new one. In fact I bet you'll find that at that price, you would end up with a used one at most shops. Now... if you dont mind getting slapped, crapped on and flamed in both the gun shop and this forum.... then by all means, go in there and ask them to match Big 5s prices. I am pretty sure you'll regret it. If your local shop knows/recognizes you at all... that question will likely move you to the top of their sh@t list :) .

Hmmmm... so you guys really think that the moss590s from Big 5 will rust more than one from your local shop?

Will do, and thanks for everyones input.

I have never heard of rusting problems. The 590A1 is the military grade version, so if it's good enough for them, then it's good enough for me :)

i thought that the parkerized finish prevents corrosion of the steel. I mean unless you abuse your piece and leave it out to rust itll eventually rust but any 590 thats well maintained wouldnt have a rusting issue

I have not found a moss yet that has not had a small rust issue somewhere on the Shotgun. Would that stop me form buying one. No. Does it make me wonder that they develop some rust - nope (something in the finish I guess)- everyone I know who owns a moss has the same minor issue.. but these are one heck of a shotgun to use.. You will enjoy the 590 (It's big)!

Big 5 does NOT sell the A1 (M#51663). Only the 'standard' 590s (M#50645).

Thanks for that info. It really helps to have a model # to go by :)

I'll be calling around tomorrow, so I'll be posting updates on prices.

No luck so far. Helms House of Guns, and Guns, Fishing, and other Stuff don't stock the A1 model. I'll be calling into Napa stores next...

I called Darin's Gun Exchange in Napa, and they said that they have it for ~$575. This is the only place I have found it so far.

I completely forgot about that option

I found someone else who I plan on going through. It will still be cheaper than this one. I'll update the thread as necessary, since I wouldn't want to put up info without asking first.

the only thing that gets rust on it is the magazine tube cap. even in the corps, we used to just soak it in clp while cleaning the rest of the gun. on my personal one, it also picks up some rust. a little bit of clp and elbow grease takes care of it. whatever you do, buy an m590a1. if all fails you can still use it like a club. hell yeah!

What's the difference between the #51663 against the #50663 590A1?
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/37_336/products_id/50663
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/37_336/products_id/46999

Im confused because i checked the mossberg website and it says "matte blue" on both guns, while Buds Gun Shop has the #50663 are a blue finish.
http://mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=5&display=specs

Is the only difference with the #51663 590 the heavy wall barrel and the metal trigger guard/safety???

They are pretty much the same thing except the #51663 has the two metal parts and the heavy barrel. If you noticed, the buttstock pads are different was well (if that matters).

#50663 is a 590

#51663 is a 590A1

I don't know about the finish (my 590A1 is parked), but the 590A1 has a heavy barrel, metal trigger guard/safety and a big rollmark on the left side.

Can someone recommend a good side saddle which can hold shells brass down, as well as a picattinny rail which will leave the ghost ring sight intact?

mesa tactical, and mesa tactical.

best shell holders and picatinny rails for shotguns on the market

they are alittle expensive but well worth the quality. heres a picture of my 590 with a mesa 8 shot shell holder and a mesa AR stock adaptor

What do you plan on using the rail for ? Surefire (http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/carfnbr/312/prrfnbr/1128/Mossberg-500-590-Picatinny-Forend-) makes a railed forend for the 500/590 series that looks pretty sweet if you just want to mount a tac light/ laser on it.

Did you have to trim a little bit off the forend so that it would clear the side saddle?

Also....for the people with 590's...do you guys have the 51663 or 50663 model? Does the extra $30 (based on Buds Gun Shop prices) make a difference by having the metal safety/trigger guard and a heavier barrel?

40caldeserteagle

I have the 51663 with metal trigger guard, metal safety and thicker barrel. The plastic safeties are notorious for breaking. Cavalry Arms (http://www.cavalryarms.com/SST-590-S.html) makes a good looking 'extended safety' (m#SST590) and sells for about $40. It has a thicker barrel so if you DO decide to put a bayonet on there, it should take the abuse. Also, I think only the 51663 has the roll mark that says M590A1. Those three items, IMO, are worth at least $30. YMMV.

Not the forend. I need it so I can put an EOTech on top of the receiver. None of the Mesa Tactical rails look like they can be installed without the ghost ring rear sight being removed. Does anyone make one that will go forward of the ghost ring sight, or does the rear sight occupy the tapped holes for the rail?

Is it possible to use the Surefire lighted forend, or will the bayonet lug get in the way?

You cannot use the new units (623FA or 623FGA) if you want to keep the bayo, you would need to find the older style 623A01. Let me know if you find one and I'll buy it off of you.

negative on the forend trimming. my 590 (SP not A1) came with the tactical 'short' forend so no modification was required. supposedly the new version mesa tactical shell holders require NO modification to the factory forend on the remington/mossberg.

as far as the 590 Vs A1 debate; the basic differences are the metal safety and trigger guard, and the heavy barrel with stamped receiver. now in my line of use, i cant find any practicality in any of those upgrades, except a metal safety. but if you are a hunter, or perhaps going into combat, or if you just want to use your shotgun as a baseball bat, then maybe a 590 a1 would be better for you. its basically designed to be just a little bit rougher than the SP.

if you are in an urbanized setting then you probably wont miss those features.
