They are all standard. Now, some are better than others.

Depends on the pistol, ammo - A lot of times the factory mags will work fine. Get the pistol and see what happens.

What Smith are you looking at?

I'm not really sure what mags they use, but if the gun and mag combination feeds empty cases it's a winner.

I'd find a friend that has a different magazines. Some 1911s take better to certain mags then others. I've got some factory Kimbers, Chip McCormicks, Wilson Combats, Springfields, and some others. Certain 1911s like others better. And yes, it will also depend on the ammo you plan to use as well.

The only 1911 single stack clones I can think of that sometimes don't take the standard mags are Llama.

The factory S&W 1911 mags (at least on my S&W 1911 which was a POS btw) are made by ACT.

Virgil Tripp's Cobra Elite mags are the best IMO. Next would be the CMC Power Mags with a upgraded spring (like Wolff or CMI) and CMI's "Patented" follower (like the original Devel style but skirted up front). The Wilson's aren't bad but their springs go bad pretty quickly and the all plastic follower tends to go bad and the slide will stop locking back. I had this happen on several Wilson Combat mags so I stopped using them all together.

I've tried the Cobra mags (both the old and new style) in all 14 of my 1911's (including my 1918 USGI) and it worked flawlessly in every single one. The upgraded CMC Power mags ran great in all of 'em too. The Wilson's choked a couple of 'em....of course, YMMV.
