Guns-in-parks comment period extended

Folks were not happy when a 60-day comment period on new rules allowing loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges ended at midnight on the East Coast, but at 9 p.m. out West and even earlier in Hawaii. (See this earlier blog post on the topic.)

So the Department of Interior will now take comments for another 30 days, ending July 30.

The new rules would, according to a National Parks Conservation Association press release: "allow visitors to carry loaded, concealed firearms in National Parks and Wildlife Refuges in states where guns are allowed in parks and refuges under state law, a change from current regulations which require guns to be unloaded and locked away during visits to parks."

Rep. Raśl M. Grijalva, D-Ariz., chair of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, was among those calling for an extension, saying:

"It is my hope that ultimately the department will decide to abandon this ill-advised idea for the safety of park visitors and wildlife alike."

Read the language of the proposed rules and directions for commenting on this Federal Register posting.

Sorry. He's sort of Arizona's version of Feinstein. It's been said that since one has to show a picture ID to vote in AZ now, that may limit his chance for re-election.

Showing ID to vote is great.... Feinstein would want everybody she is capable of bribing to vote anyway. Banning guns in parks is ridiculous on all counts.

Hmmm, sounds like they weren't getting the feedback they wanted, so they decided to keep the voting open until the results turn out like they prefer.

Oh well, more chances to "vote" and vote often! :D

Most places I've been, the wildlife is fairly well adjusted to humans and it's ravers, cartels, and other wild humans that don't care about laws that posed the biggest concern.

For a gun board, this is not getting very much attention. This is a big deal for everyone that owns a gun, especially people who enjoy the outdoors.

This thread deserves bumping. The news hit during the holiday weekend, and didn't get much play. I know many have already sent in comments, but if you missed it, you may (should) comment here: http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main?main=DocumentDetail&o=090000648053d497

The new deadline for comments is August 8.

I submitted another comment.

This is another step in the right direction for gun owners. Hopefully more people get on board with this... its a big deal.

It is my hope that ill advised ideology like hoplophobia and the people who perpetuate it will be abandoned for the benefit of tourists and residents alike.
