View Full Version : Firearms WITHOUT sound suppressors cause global warming?

Anyone know what gas is produced after discharging a firearm and can it harm our atmosphere?
If so, do you think that a sound suppressor would reduce the harmful gas?
I know a suppressor just slows the expansion of the gas generated, but could a filter of some sort be put in place to filter the gas before entering our atmosphere?
If the answer is yes to my questions then we should start saving the earth one shot at a time. We could use the tree-huggers love for the earth to push for suppressors on all guns in america.;)
I'm just bored at work and was thinking of other positive things about suppressors besides saving your ears.
I still like my idea of trapping the gas somehow and changing the sound of the gunshot to a duck quack(example), keeping the decibel level the same.:)

I think the word I was looking for was divert. Your right "trapping" the gases would not be a good idea.

Every time you fire a gun it releases "greenhouse gases". Don't tell anyone or else they'll make a law against it or charge us for every shot.
EDIT: :D Lighten up folks, it's a joke.

My butt releases greenhouse gas too. Have fun taxing that!

are you serious??? the drive to the range will produce more emmisions than the guns you shoot ever will. plus the whole we are the cause is still up for debate, unless your an al gore follower. our human impact is around 2%

Every shot releases carbon dioxide, thus you are contributing to global warming. However, you can offset your carbon footprint by not breathing, thus saving about 1 kg of CO2 emissions per day.
Gunpowder is 75% Potassium Nitrate (KNO3), 10% Sulphur (S) and 15% Carbon (C). The chemical reaction is:
10 KNO3 + 3 S + 8 C → 2 K2CO3 + 3 K2SO4 + 6 CO2 + 5 N2

I'm not kidding you got to check out this russian silent pistol... the cartridge is contained and doen't expell gas. Look at the ammo links. The underwater rounds are cool

Be careful what you wish for. Sure suppressors are wonderful in their place but this path would undoubtedly lead to greater restrictions. I was board once to and thought about how OSHA may be a path to greater availability of suppressors. The very next thought was that OSHA is a restrictive administration and although a few of my firearms would benefit from suppression clearly they all wont.

I know this is all fantasy, but you could have some guns with or some guns without. Kind of like the guy who owns a four door truck, but also has a hybrid. Now he wants to save the planet so he drives the hybrid, but he can also drive his truck whenever he wants.
If such a "greenhouse gas reducing suppressor" was available, physically and legally, we could have "go green" days and everyone would use their suppressor that day(or something to that affect).
I know that we(humans) don't make that big of a dent in the problem, but a lot of people think we do. Why not use their ignorance to get us some sound suppressors.;)

stop driving your car and shoot all you want. the impact wont even register.. like i said before the eintire human population barley even registers. look at how much green house gasses volcano's let off? we should cap them before we go into the crazed green revolution. im all for the earth but this issue seems to be a snow ball effect. next thing you know cows will have bags attached to their butts to keep the methane from escaping. they fart alot. somthing like 100 cows can fill up a hot air balloon in one day with farts

I think you are missing the point. My orginal post was half joke half let's see if we can use this green house craziness to our advantage. I don't really think that shooting guns has any effect, but some people might.

even if suppressors were green, they won't get legalized because people who don't wanna be confused by facts will say they're evil. just like nuclear powerplants.
