My FFL told me that affective today, all transfers (might have been just handguns, but I don't remember) will require DOJ approval.

Is this true?

What kind of hassle is this going to be for someone who buys a lot of gunbroker.com or such?

Edit: Just found this in another, non-related thread. This is what my FFL was talking about:

July 1 2008 is the beginning of the California CFLC (Certified Firearms License Check, if I recall properly...)

Very briefly, any FFL to FFL transfer to a CA dealer on or after this date requires the originating FFL to register with Calif DOJ (easy to do, very simple website) and ensure that the CA FFL is in fact a valid licensee (a number is generated thru the website). A confirmation letter is printed out and accopanies the shipped firearm into CA.

This has nothing to do with type of firearm - it's about the *transaction* and FFL details, that's all.

Yep. FFL to a CA Dealer (regardless whether or not the originating FFL is in California) has to have this CFLC letter accompanying the shipment. It can be one gun or one million... as long as it's all one shipment.

No, not all transfers. Only those from a FFL dealer, a firearms shipped from an unliscenced individual to your dealer doesn't have to get a CFLC number. Even though it doesn't affect them, it is more useless legislation which means we will see more "not for sale to california" ads.

I overheard the salesman at the Reno Cabella's using this as a hard sell this weekend. "If you're going to buy a gun and ship it to California, you better do it before the First of the Month. I'm not sure if we can ship guns to California after that."

I'm just glad I wasn't in the market for one of their $20,000 over-unders.

I spoke with a very nice official analyst at the CA DOJ Firearms dept. He clarified that only guns shipped on or after the 1st must have the letter. If your out of state FFL shipped before July 1st, there is no need for a letter.

I saw a listing on Gunbroker earlier tonight that said something like:

Due to new state regulations, we will no longer send firearms to California.

That didn't take long!

I actually purchased a firearm today, and I had to pay an extra $10 fee. Oh well, guns are expensive.

Edit: I did not buy off gunbroker though.

I saw a GB listing that listed a $50 CA PITA fee.
If I win the rifle at a low enough price, I'll pay it.
