Assume a firearm is lawful to own in California.

My uncle owns that firearm in Nevada, and wants to give it to me.

Do either one of us have to do any paperwork whatsoever?

Yes, it would need to be transfered through a CA FFL to satisfy both federal and state law.

10-day wait at the dealer, and they can charge whatever they want to transfer it to you. It can't be a prohibited firearm, so no AW or NFA.

And if it is a pistol, it must be on the roster of "safe" handguns.

edit: what type of firearm are we talking about to give specific advise?

Yes virtually all transfers have paperwork involved.

He won't have any paperwork but you certainly will.

Is it a long gun or handgun?

Either way, he has to ship it to your FFL and you will still need to complete the DROS/4473, pay the transfer fee's and wait 10 days.
