Digital Radio Scanners. Aka Police scanners. I was told by another member that I should post up about it. I dont know everything about them but I know enough to get it programed where I can hear what I want. (San Diego area)

If you guys think it would be another good tool then I can make add all the info and a online test drive. The test drive would be on a teamspeak (VOIP) server (Teamspeak Client needed, Its small and I use it daily with my own server) for the State of California.

So let me know what you all think...

I understand that government agencies in Imperial Valley went in with San Diego for their communications. My question is, is the system using a trunking system and analog signal or is it digital like the Orange County system ?

i.c., san diego l.e. switched to a frequency hopping system several years ago. it's virtually impossible to follow a single call now. this was done to defeat scanners. in s.d. a waste of money. still work elsewhere.

Can't you use a trunking scanner to follow the calls seamlessly? I had always understood the channel-hopping was simply a way to multiplex the information across limited freqs in the most efficient manner (a la packet switching networks). Defeating analog scanners was simply a convenient byproduct IIRC.

Ive got three scanners, including an apco 25 digital trunker.... And a wide band discone antenna in my attic.

Was much more into it when we lived in Hollywood... There was ALWAYS something to listen to....

In OC its not as fun as most transmissions are scrambled, but it did save our bacon during the Santiago Fire....

I had one a while ago and had it programmed for the Sacramento Sheriff's Department and surrounding agencies. I sold it after learning that they are switching to digital and although the scanner was digital capable.. the chip was somewhere in the $250+ neighborhood.

If you want to listen to the police traffic, you'll probably want something like a Uniden Bearcat BCD396T scanner that can do digital, apco 25 digital trunking, and of course analog transmissions. If you're wondering what frequencies your locality is using you can check out RadioReference.com's Database (http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?stid=6) for more info.

The fire departments have not changed much over the years, their frequencies are many, so thay all can talk to each other in a major crises.

Most agencies have went to the trunk system 800mhz type, it is difficult to pick up all car to car traffic. Alot of messages or non emergency type of calls, are sent over the MDT's (computers) in the units.

Your high priority calls, pursuits, major felony crimes are still broadcast of the agencies main frequencies.

IF you just want to hear what's going on in your neighborhood, many system (scanners) out there that will give you what you need.

Yes some frequencies are scrambled, SWAT, NARCOTICS, INTELLIGENCE units have the ability to scramble radio traffic. Most just use their cell phone.

Some frequencies will transmit and have a range of say 3 miles and not be bouncing off a repeater, so you won't hear them generally. Surveilance units usually operate on these frequencies.

But everyone should be able to hear about the big stuff happening with the right scanner.

The woman and I want a scanner so bad.

Very expensive to get started. It sounds like I need a lot of 'stuff' to pickup the goods in Sacramento.

While most all of the police are using Trunked systems and yes From San Diego County to Imperial County is on the San Diego RCS.

From reading seems like you guys got older scanners. I can hear everything. Even heard a CHP that was watching for speeders on a on ramp a buddie and I where passing.

with Trunked systems you dont use Frequencies like the old days its now talk groups, IE if your on a talkgroup and eveytime someone keys up they are givin a TEMP Freq. out of a pool of freqs. and when they are done givin a waiting time for the freq to release back to the pool. then it sits back on the control Ch.

while say the SD Sheriffs are on the Digi system and using P25 Encoding, and the City of SD Police are using trunking but not digi.

The Scrambled Freqs or Encrypted, yes there are some, but thos are done on the hand held.

You can still get SWAT, VICE, NARCOTICS, etc

Its not hard to get Car to car, when normaly they just switch to a Tactical Ch.

I have heard DOJ driving around on surveillance tailing a car.

Then I heard DOJ screaming on San Diego Police system for cops. They where tailing two dude and better Ill put the link to the recording, http://www.scandiego.com/~stream/ScanDiego.com-Audio/ScanDiego.com%20Audio%20Archives/896893C4-A9C7-4335-81B0-60ACDA314F49.html

You just need to get a Digi. Your system is set up like San Diegos

I would suggest a BCD396T (handheld) or BCD996T (Car Radio size)

Is where I bought it, and was one of the cheapest prices!

Make sure you get a USB cable with it.

ALSO: if you get teamspeak here the test drive: radio.scannerbuff.net:8767 add that to the servers on teamspeak, google teamspeak for it.
