Is the S&W M&P45 in Dark Earth Brown legal for civilians in CA? I checked the DOJ Roster of Approved Handguns and it's not on there. These are the only 2 listed:

M&P 45 (Mag. Safety & Thumb Safety) / Stainless Steel, Polymer Pistol 4.5" .45 ACP 1/31/2009

M&P 45 (Mag. Safety) / Stainless Steel, Polymer Pistol 4.5" .45 ACP 1/31/2009

As far as I know, this pistol is not even available in Stainless Steel. I know I've seen the blued model for sale in my local gun shop, but it's not on the list. Is this a typo, or what?

The slide is blackened stainless. I don't think the dark earth is listed.

I was just about to correct my post, but you beat me to it. It's described as "Black Melonite" on the slide portion. However, the frame is only described as "polymer". So that means it can be in any color frame, right?

The reason I ask is because Davidson's won't allow me to order it because "there are certain restrictions in your area that may prevent you from purchasing this item".

Thanks.

Aren't different colors one of the allowable changes manufactures can make without having to resubmit the handgun for testing?

There's no color or SKU spec'd in the DOJ listing - that describes any color pistol.

All S&W M&Ps have stainless slides, they're just blued.

I think you and the FFL could run with the FDE gun if the DROS entry system has the same description as the public website does.

If DOJ wants to be more specific, then they have to do that themselves.

That's cool that it lists both the models of the M&P45. How long has the thumb safety'd mp45 been out before DOJ ok'd it?

The thumb safety is original equipment on the M&P45.

I believe it was put in newer models, the first M&P45s did NOT have them. I remember the fuss at the M&P boards where they were excited about this new feature. I'm wondering when S&W added them with the safety, and when they were listed as OK in CA?

I like my M&P without the added safety. As designed, it's plenty safe for HD. Actually better as there's one less thing to fumble with in the dark.

As far as I know the first ones came with the thumb safety as the pistol was designed to compete for the military contract that stipulated a safety. That is why it was there in the first place as most consider the thumbsaftey on the the M&P to be redundant.

I've called (4) different FFL's, and they all say it is not CA legal because Dark Brown Earth is not specified on the list.

don't think so. the one I'm looking for is # 109307 and has a shorter barrel than the one on the roster list..

I ran through the same thing when trying to get an early OD G19. Just had to find a different FFL As I recall, the part numbers were the same - just a different color. Are the part numbers the same for the M&P?

The one I'm looking for is SKU: 109156. This is the web page:http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=11101&langId=-1&productId=53907&tabselected=tech&isFirearm=Y&parent_category_rn=26807

It's not actually the FFL's saying they're not legal, it's the distributors that are saying that. Davidson's will not ship this model to CA dealers.

Keep in mind though...it has the magazine disconnect feature...Doesn't really matter for target shooting, but for defense it's horrible.
